Im running a mini spool in the front of my hilux.
I would not recommend fitting one in the front unless you are short of funds and only have a open centre. Its a dam pig to steer a fully locked vehicle on hard ground, not to mention cv strain!
In the rear their is no problems the rear axles in toyotas can take a fair bit of punishment.
Of course I dont think you can beat a air locker because you have the option to be locked or unlocked. The problem i have come across with mine in the front is when your in the rocks you have no choice if your diff is locked its either locked or nothing.
In the rear i would say if you can get one at a good price go for it.
At least you know it can never have a mechanical or seal failure.
I have had mine welded in the rear for the last 1 1/2 (1 year running 35in Boggers, the last 6 months running 38.5 claws) and i have had no problems with them letting go or twisting axles!!!
I really can't work out why people never look for the cheaper alternative!!!!
How much is one of these SPOOLS, $250.00 there abouts.
You could just weld it and you would be $245.00 closer to some thing useful like a set of longs!!!!
Adrian, a spool is without a doubt stronger than a welded carrier, the welding changes the strength of the carrier, due to the excess heat involved in welding. Even if welded good it will break eventually. Although yours is doing quite, well.....surprisingly, and I know from personal amusement, that you do rape and pillage the thing mercilessly. Bubs, is a dreamer and won't get one, but its cool to talk about it and link pics, like allpros dana 60 toy hybrid, and so forth.
It is my opinoin that you should just
get an ARB LOCKER F&R
Being cheap now will only cost you in the future
You street that car remember
You have gone without if for a year what is another couple of months
if you work it right you should have that runner for the rest of your life. save up and buy a ARB air locker.
You will only regret it BUD.
yeah Scotty's right just save up for good shit now, otherwise u'll by crap then later on want to buy the good stuff and it will end up costing u more which means u wont have as much money
98 Xtra Cab Lux.... slowly filling up with the Budscustoms Catalogue : Street, Track & Trail - Parts & Fabrication Budscustoms Facebook Page
Now correct me if I am wrong but if you put and ARB in you replace the stuff you weld. So why waste the cost of a spool when you are gunna replace the welded stuff with an ARB anyway ??

In saying that one has never come apart, whats the chances now of it letting go just as i am about to spank MOGROVERS ar$e at XRCC round 2!!
Hell no a welded is not better than a custom built SPOOL, but what i was trying to emphasize was that there is no need for these YOUNG GUYS trying to build a RIG up on a budget to spend money where they can get something that works just aswell and then they can put that money to somthing usefull like LONGS, Twin cases or DIRTY GIRLS!!!!

I put an ARB in the front
Spool in the back for now
and if i ever have any spare money for a second arb i can do it down the track and remove the spool

dont waste ya $$ on a spool just weld it, mines welded rear and ARB front and i have had no probs except that i chew out the 5.29's (only coz they r toyota gears, a mate of mine has an after market set of 5.)29's with a welded rear, 35 MTR's and has hah absolutly no probs

that is true! you weld the spiders, and ARB and some detroits replace the entire internal carrier, bolts to your crown wheel, and replaces the whole lot, so you can get to the welding job.

P.S i still like the idea of the Dana 60 hybrid
good points, except for the dirty women!!
i think you best wasting your money on cleaner women, otherwise youll get syphillis.

i keep hearing the 5.29's break really easily. but where exactly do they keep breaking? how strong are they really?
The pinions are very small but in a high performance 2wd aplication you will prob not have such a drama. These usually break due to shock load caused by bouncing or hoping in off-road use.
Nice topic, anyone know a gear cutter who has made spools for landcruiser rr diffs in Auz? Tried Hardman gear cutters in Melb (supposed to be the best for 4WD / drag industry, etc) but they were not interested.
30 spline 8"
Yes - the welded diff broke after 2 yrs.
thanks
