I pulled my axles and the diff (ARB locker) out today due to a broken right side axle and found that the axle broke just past the splined section.
The broken stub is still wedged in the side gear and for the life of me I can't push it out. I put it in a vice and buggered (bent) 2 punches trying to knock it out. There is just enough room between the pinion rod and housing to slide a punch down each side but the stub is really jammed in there.
Anyone got any tips ?? Or does the thing have to be pulled apart to get it out ?? I fear the side gear maybe rooted anyway as the axle stub is really twisted into the splines. The 2 other rear axle breakages I've had before the broken axle stub was easily punched out.

Before I drilled a hole in it Frank I would weld a bolt or simalar to it and try a crowbar or similar.
If you split the ARB, renew the locktabs on the diff housing bolts, DO NOT reuse them they fall off and the bolts come out and make holes in your housing. The bolts are loctited from the factory as well as lock tabbed, which must say something.

Drill a hole in it Monty ? Bloody hell what are your axles made of ,wood?
At any rate with all the swarf from the drilling your ARB won't be happy and should be pulled apart for cleaning. Why not save the drilling and pull in apart first up ,with the side gear on the bench vice removing the broken slug is quite easy.
