GQ Power steering

Post by bazzle »

I blew a hose on Friday on my GQ diesel and had it fixed by Pirtek ($72).
(cost less then the petrol one I have fixed by them 4 years ago ($85).

Put it back on and started engine. Seemed to bleed instantly without having to lift wheels off ground. BUT steering felt really light. Too much assist.

Couldnt fault anything so went off on a trip Sat morn to the High country.
Stopped in traralgon for coffee and steering was back to normal weight but with pump noise when turning.

Opened hood and oil has been leaking out cap on reservoir :?:
Put a drip from cap onto paper and it had metallic fine perticles in it. :?

Decided to return home before I got stuck miles from anywhere.
Before I did I went to a local steering place (Pedders) and fitted a Power steer filter to catch metal bits.

After this the noise went away and seemed to steer OK so continued on for 3 good days in mountains with a lot of heavy wheeling thrown in.

I will be flushing out and fitting another filter but am stuck as to what went wrong.

My guess is the 1st bleed didnt happen properly (should of taken weight off front end and cycled steering as I normally do, and some air caused bleed valve to stay shut or vibrate maybe also causing meatl bits?

Also the petrol model had a restrictor in hose. Not sure re the Diesel ones.
Any one else had similar???

Bled mine once the proper way and once just with the wheels on the ground as you described in my petrol gq and both times was successful, no extra noise fron pump and definately no metal filings. Only cost me around $60 bucks each time at pirtek in kilsyth as well.

they both should have the restrictor in the hose. a pirtek man told me is was because the box doesn't create any back pressure, so if the flow isn't restricted by the hose, the pump overspools itself. i don't know how true that is, just what he said.

replace the steering box with an orbital valve and you can get rid of the restrictor. :D
