Could be your starter motor solenoid is stuffed (open circuit or stuck?) It pulls in and makes the electrical contact for the high current to the starter motor.

Try thumping it firmly with something while somebody tries to crank the engine.

Your battery could be cactus, or the earth wire may have melted. The cable from the battery to the starter motor is unfused, and if it shorted to the manifold MASSIVE amounts of current would flow, in the positive and the negative (or earth) strap. The battery could have gone flat (very Quickly), and the plates could have buckled.
Did you reconnect the solenoid wire (the thin wire to the starter motor)?

And, the question I really want to know, Is there a hole in the manifold??????????

Cheers, Dean
