viscous fan

Post by yella_rangie »

my clutch fan is knackered but i have heard of people drilling and tapping a hole in the clutch casing draining the old oil out and refilling with engine oil or cooking oil. any one hear of this? or also of filling the insides up with that blue steel stuff. i have a clutch with the single threaded rod so a xf fan wont fit this. wat can i do cheaply or dodgey!! ahah

I had the same problem with mine firstly I tried to get some of that silicon oil in there but they are a sealed unit. I ended up locking up the clutch fan using a concave washer of a shock absorber in between the fan and the retaining bolt and the Rangie has been running cool as ever since.

I know its been said before, but this is a good way to throw your blades. Ever seen the mess? I have.
If you are desperate and poor, maybe buy the Toyota silcone (from a Toyota dealer), and drill and tap.
I thought the XF had a LH thread same as threaded Rangie, and you have to trim the blades???

Ford fan same thread.
Yes needs blades trimmed about 5mm

But blades are at a different pitch.

i cant get a ford fan to fit......the only ones i have been able to see have a nut thing on the front of them. i need a clutch fan with a hole straight through the centre. this is on a 1981 2 door. i might try the concave washer idea.

I bought a new clutch from Range Rove for about $220 (by memory). The last thing you need is a blade getting thrown off and going thru radiator/bonnet etc.

You may also find that some of the blades on your fan are cracked - replace the fan as well.

I think the shaft you are talking about is a very early type. the 81 should have a flange with 4 holes to take 4 bolts.
I am pretty confident that the single bolt type is obsolete, so you will be faced with buying a different water pump when it dies. So then buy a single LH thread type, and fit a Ford clutch if you want cheap.
But its still going to cost you!!!
You must have the last one of that type of pump in the World.
Dunno what tto do in the meantime, maybe try the silcone from Toyota, or lock up, but you may get a ventilated bonnet. I have seen them go right through,, destroy the Rad core, and smash the battery. This in itself could negate any savings.

Disregard previous on the viscous coupling. The 1 bolt water pump appears to be available again,British 4WD has them, and I think they are the cheapest.
