i own a GU 2.8TD, needless to say its gutless as all hell. Getting some engine troubles recently, and i think its the fuel pump along with the cooling system.
Pump alone i know its going to cost me 2000 +, and cooling system im not sure. Also im blowing a lot of smoke out the back.
The poor bastard has only done 85000K's and i intend on keeping this for a few more years.
I was thinking of throwing in there a 4.2TD. I have looked around and a refurbished engine costs around 4-5K labor maybe another 3-4K. so all up im thinking around 8-10K give or take.
Ive looked at the prices of 4.2's and they aint within in budget.
Im sure this question has been asked before, but i couldnt find anything from 2.8 to 4.2.
Will the engine fit straight on, do i need custom brackets etc?
will i need a new computer?
any complications which are common?
Will i need a bigger radiator? (give my cooling problem i may get one tho)
will engineering be a pain in the ass?
what things should i look out for?
if anyone with previous experience in this could give me some helpful hints, that would be great!

this mod has been done in a GQ, but cant remember who exactly done it,
1 - I believe the driver side engine mount is different,
2 - The TD42 is a mechanically controlled engine, your also going to need an accelorator cable and the likes, so you might be better off buying a front cut.
3 - Radiator, if you go the front cut option you will have this anyways, if not, the may be identicle,
4 - Engineer shouldnt have any problems as the GU's came out with a TD42 in them, with the same brakes and all, so chaging over shouldnt be a drama,
you ill need the gearbox to mate up with the TD42 as the RD28t had a smaller gearbox from a 300ZX i believe,
you will also have to get the engine bay rewired.

Might be worth going to the auctions and seeing what a written off GU is selling for. As then you will get everthing you need. Stat write-offs go for cheaper as you are only bidding against wreckers, as the car can not be re-reg'd. And if it is burnt it is better, as all the panels are buggered. But the drivtrain usually survives. Might be some alloy parts that might need replacing. Actually this might be bad as you want the loom.

My mate bought a front cut for his 4b from a wrecker. most wreckers will sell them, but i havent seen any around the area with a patrol.
so these axels go for a bit do they?
may be better to buy a wreck then...
You're pushing shit up hill to get a GU 4.2td front cut.
Any GU parts are still thin on the ground so wreckers will strip every little bit and sell them for a bundle each.
I know 1 guy who picked up a 4.2td GU wagon that had a big side impact and but most parts intact for $10k even. Motor started 1st time, not sure if it was a stat rightoff or not though.
Dude had no idea what the parts were worth but unfortunately he is using the lot otherwise I would have been buying the diffs off his for $500!!!!!

im not sure if im following you, but the 2.8's came factory with turbo and intercooler, and the are a bit of a slug, but my old mans pulls a camper trailer running 35's okay,

yeah they did come factory with a pissy turbo and intercooler. But they are still a slug. They have a dead spot right at the start of the revs, so towing heavy things is out of the questions, or damn near impossible. had to go into low range to take off with a call full of people on a 30 degree slope, tarmac btw.

ok
2.8 come std with 4.6 gearing - to suit 31s
4.2s come std with 4.11 gearing (most) to suit 31s
4.3 - to suit 33's
4.6 to suit 35s
4.8 to suit 37s
now when you look at it... the 2.8s gearing in a 4.2 diesel patrol will need to run 35's to retain your std gearing.
33's arnt too bad either...

We find in the old mans RD28T you just need to get the revs up a bit, and let the clutch out, so its nearly boosted, but involves riding the clutch= very costly
