Valve adjustment...

Post by totto »

I've been adjusting the valves on my 3.3 over and over again, but still there seems to be one or two valves that are ticking.

My workshop manual states that the valves should be adjusted with the crank in upper dead center, and lists the valves that should be adjusted in one position and the valves that should be adjusted 360 crank degrees later.

I've always used to adjust valves of one cylinder when the "oposite" cylinders valves are "switching", i.e. adjusting number one while number six' exhaust valve closes and intake valve opens, then number two while number 5 is "switching" and soforth.

Now i've tried both methods, but still a valve or two is out of adjustment.

Are theese engines subjected to excessive wear in the contact surface between the valve stem and rocker arm?

If so, if there are scores in the surface, that could explain what makes it difficult to adjust properly.

And if so, does anyone have any recommendation to how to fix it? Grind off to smooth the scores? Change the rocker arm(s)? or...?

They do wear uneven. Try using a feeler strip cut to half width.
You can get the ends machined but its better to replace.
Check the shaft for wear too.
