5.29 Diffs

5.29 Diffs
Hi Guys. I'm about to purchase second hand 5.29 diffs for my Gen 1 Paj (1989 - LWB, Hi-roof, 2.5TD, 5spMT) here in Bangkok. I need information on what type/size diffs my rig has. Does it have the 7.25" up front and 8" at the rear?
As you probably know communication here is kinda difficult as english is not used often. Therefore the more facts I have the easier it'll be to transact with the 4x4 shops selling these second hand 5.29 diffs.
What should I look out for before getting second hand diffs? Tips will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
Carl

Well I'm 99% sure the front will have to be the 7.25" unit with MB185457 or MB527152 5.29 C&P.
The rear could be either 8" (MB241981 or MB527149 C&P) or the 9" (MB598486 C&P) for the 5.29. The last of the Gen 1's Mitsu did mix and match parts but in other markets you never know.
The wreckers will be able to tell you which models they pulled the diffs out of. There is no easy way of telling which diff you have in the rear of yours other than by measuring and comparing to what the wrecker has.
Once you confirm the diffs you have make sure the ones you get that the teeth are not chipped or pitted and they haven't been dropped.
If you really want to be sure you can get a reputable diff place to check them out and do the install.

I visited a few 4x4 shops today. Much to my surprise there are 2 big 4x4 shops that carry brand new 5.29 C&P gears for the Gen 1 Paj. The gears are made in Italy by a company called Antonio Masiero. Is there anyone here on the board who has these gears on their rig/s?
I took pictures of the gear set. Click on the link below
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/paj4x41989/album?.dir=44cb&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/paj4x41989/my_photos
As recommended by Frank, I also checked with the Mitsu dealer in the Philippines. They said that my Gen 1 Paj has a 4.875 final gear ratio. and the part numbers of the OEM C&P gears on my rig are as follows:
Front MB185456
Rear MB527147
Is it possible to determine the size of my front and rear diffs with these part numbers? The Italian 5.29 C&P gear set being sold here would fit a 7.25" front diff (Antonio Masiero part# MI.11.001) and a 9" rear diff (Antonio Masiero part# MI.14.001).
Thanks for the help guys!

Hi Carl, yes your hunch is correct :-
7.25" front & 8" rear.
7.25" front 5.29 = MB185457
8" rear 5.29 = MB527152 or MB241981
Try your Mitsu dealer for the 8" rear part no's if they can't get them I can get it for you from a gear importer here in Oz (I just ordered 2 x MB241981 for a US guy).
Frank.

Thanks Frank! How much would the MB241981 rear gear set cost?
This basically eliminates the brand new Italian C&P gear set from my options . The gear importer here in Bangkok only has the 7.25" front diff and 9" rear diff in stock.
I'll renew my search for a set of 5.29 diffs (7.25" up front and 8" at the rear) tomorrow. I may have to settle for "second hand"/used diffs.
Cheers.

I have got the C&P from a Japanese source I got from Frank. Aki was very helpful, but it takes 2-3 months to get them. I got the 7,25" for the front and two 8" sets. One for the rear and the other for the front of a 3lt GenI paj. So after a while, I changed my front to install the ARB locker and I had the C&P ready.
But keep in mind that if you have 4,88 already it doesn't make a big difference. I wanted to be as low as possible in order to have 33s (and 35s in the future).
The 2,85 gears on the other hand, made a HUGE difference.

Yes I have to agree there the 5.29's (I had 4.88's before) is an improvement on road but don't expect miracles running 35"s for 33"s they would be great with a 3.0 V6 (particularly a 5sp).
The 2.85's is a huge improvement over the stock low range gearing even running 35"s

hiya frank,
aparat from slight engine troubles ... will get sorted out eventually - i have taken your advice and visited the boys at procomp ...they are great ! then again im about to spend 3k on my Paj !! going 33 mongrels and lifting, etc, etc ....
my question now is with the 2.85 gears for the t/case ...how much and how hard is it to do ?? ive put an auto lokker in the front of my NF would it be harder/easier then that ?
do you still sell these ...or can get them ....... ?

Yeah the guys at Procomp are pretty good......................
Glad to hear your modding the Paj.
Is your Paj a 3.0 V6 auto ?? If so there are 2 sets of auto 2.85's left (they are different to the 5sp).
There will be another batch made up in the next 3 months or so anyway but if yours is an auto you can get a set now.
Let me know.
Frank.

I have a 7.25 5.29 gearset for sale, fits the high pinion front. Let me know what the dealer wants for your gears and I will sell them for half that to make it worth the trouble of shipping. Really looking to get rid of them now that I bought a front arb. Never installed.
