just wondering if anyone cold tell me the drive type of my rangie? its a 1981 2 door 3.5lt crab engine in it. is it a slot drive spade drive or gear drive? i need to buy a new one as my oil pressure is in the red area during idle. and only just above it during acceleration and driving. thanks

It should be a slot drive, are your sure its the pump? there is not a lot to go wrong with them, i would think your gauge is wrong.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

tis a brand new gauge and a brand new sender unit...aftermarket version. also if it gets warm after a good pounding in the mud or watever the oil light on the dash flickers on and off..i turned the idle up and it went away though it now idles high. to make it easier in the diagnostics heres some more info

it has new oil...of the right thickness....it has both a new oil pressure sender and a new gauge. there is oil in it..full .....there is no water in the oil or any other foreign matter...it has now been doing this for a bout 6 months

excessive clearance between the gears and the housing is possible as the housing is only aluminium,it wears from the gears rotating against it.if that's the case oil then leaks btween the housing and gears and causes low pressure,the oil is supposed to get carried between 2 individual teeth and the housing.

Er, Its probably that the bearings have so much slop that the oil is pouring out.
While the pump wears, if the oil light is flickering, and you know the oil light switch is OK, then odds on it has pretty worn bearings. Also the main cause of pump wear is metal filings from a buggered cam.
In summary, by the time an oil pump wasd worn enough to give low pressure then the rest of teh motor is cactus. Do not waste your time. Just drive it till it dies.

The relief valve in the oil pump housing can stick open - this will cause loss of pressure and lube to engine components. 90602064 in pic

so maybe its worth me pullin it apart then to have a gander? i dont have one to put in yet so i want to make sure bits aint gonna fall out and not go back in.......i dont like the idea of drive it til it dies...

If the relief valve sticks open, you get NO, NIX NADA oil pressure and the cam self destructs in a couple of minutes.

You can get new gears , but the wear is more likely to be the housing and the lower cover as they are aluminium and the gears are steel. This requires a reco or new timing cover. If you like take off the cover , drop the gears and have a look. you will see the wear lines from metal bits clearly, and the cover will be grooved.
You will have to prime the pump then by filling it with vaseline. Make sure the engiine is COLD or the vaseline will all run over your hand. ask me how I know.
