Use a "Dawn" solution. Seriously this stuff cuts through all deposits. Then clay bar, cleanse and finally wax. Only ever use Dawn if you want to strip all the wax and residue off.

What sort of roof you got dude ?
Tin, Cement Tiles or Terracotta Tiles ?
The black shart is just like you say crap building up but mostly dirt and grime from the nasty air we breath...
Terracotta roofs can get pretty damn stained if trees are continually dropp shite on them like you say.. And it is not easily fixed with a clean - it just wont come out... Cement tiles with the "black stuff" cleaned off, will reveal a lump of cement with no glaze and very high porosity. That is when it rains each tile absorbs water (The water doesn't bead so it is being absorbed)..... factor that into over 4 tons of roof...wooden houses aren't meant for that kind of weight.....
Argghhh roof tiling is on my mind again......... arrrggghhh
Paint the roof.......
