HJ60 Glow plug timer problem

Post by sambo »

My glow light only stays on for about a second but i tested the voltage at the glow plugs and it stays on for 15-30secs like it is supposed to, its just that the glow light only stays on for about a second.

Any suggestions why.

mine does the same, i ignore it :)

if you are quiet you will hear a relay switching off about 15 seconds after turning key, then i believe it goes to a second lower voltage stage so it doesnt melt the glow plugs.

i normally just wait for the "click" at about 15 seconds then hit the starter. Never has a problem starting if i do that, even in the dead of winter (as dead as qld winters could be considered)

yeah i can also hear the relay go off. when i tested it with the multimeter it was only at 6v for the first 15 seconds and then after that it turned off completely. Is this how it should be???

Like shadow, i too ignore the light. Stays on for about a second.

Listen for the 1st click (about 10 secs), start the car. About a minute later or less, you hear another click then the voltmeter goes up to 13.9 volts or so and the glow plugs are completely off.

The first glow runs at about 7.5 volts on mine then drops to about 4 volts for the 2nd stage. They are 6 volt glow plugs.

I am happy to just wait for the relay to click off but it would be better if the light would stay on as well. Has anyone else fixed this problem. could i just wire in another relay which is switched by the voltage at the glowplug rail and connect it directly to the light.

you could probably parallel the light off the actual 12 volt relay signal for the primary glow relay.

wouldnt be too hard

yeh that would work

or you could wire the globe directly to the glow plug relay as carts said, a 6 watt globe is extremely insignificant compared to what the glow plugs pull.

GLOW PLUGS

Post by Bazz107 »

I had the same problem, fixed it by wiring the light straight to the glow plug relay now my light is bright for 10seconds then dims for a further 10 -15 you can also hear the clicks, but I have the radio turned up all the time ;) Never had a problem with this setup, you can replace the timer but cost fair bit for no real gain.

my 60 had the same problem
I found two faults
1: a poor connection on the sence wire just before the buz bar
2: In behind the n/s kick panel is the ECU that controls the glowies . Pull the covers off and resolder all the joints and it should fix it :)
