legalities of wider diffs

Post by hypo »

just wonder wots the legal stance is on putting wider diffs under a car...

i was under the impression that track width was only allowed 2 increase by 25mm ??

if wider diffs r fitted and the rig is engineered does it then make them legal or does the 25mm adr rule come into voiding the engineers cert just like the tyre argument on enginneers papers ????

in NSW

it goes by the factory specs on the diff u install

"possibly" for commercial vehicles only?? not too sure
but for 4wd's , def. goes by the fitted diff , not the vehicle specs

I thought you'd be the last person to ask this question hypo, seeing as you've already done it once.

There appears to be a loophole -

They allow the replacement of diff housings etc.
They do NOT specifically state that the width of the assembly be the same as original housing.
They state that track width can only be increased by up to 50mm with beam axles on 4x4s

So, if one took wider axle assemblies, fitted them with wheels with up to 100% backspacing - the centre track requirements could still be fulfilled. ( none of this takes into account increased wheel bearing loads etc )

Just a thought .....
