Square rhs for sliders

what do you guys think about using square section for sliders instead of round tube i was thinking 65x65x5mm, what do you all reckon?

I reckon that would be more than strong enough. maybe a bit heavy, but that should stop most things.

with a wall thickness that you're talking about it would be fine.

they'll be heavy, with tube you can use a lighter gauge and have similar strength.

I ended up getting some made out of a high grade steel tube, they are light ang have proved to be bloody good so far.....I think that RHS would crush easier resulting in a battered looking slider without really saving yourself much in the initial set up anyway

the RHS will work heaps better than tube - try something like 75x50x3.2 though

Tube will bend easier than tube....mine are only 50x50x3.5 and i have done a fair bit od rubbing on them but if your worried go for the 5mm.

thanks for info, pics, and links guys. i decided to use 50x50x4mm square, im going to run 2 lengths parallel with each other, i wanted to angle the second piece up so it sorted of curled around the sill, but its the wives run around and since i lifted it 5 inches she reckons she needs sidesteps, so im just going to make them flat and plate the tops of em, im only a backyarder with limited tools and skills so ill just do the best i can, heres a pic of where i got to tonite, ill post another of them when they are finished

Don't forget to make the struts and mounts that join them to the chassis beefier enough to take a pounding. A guy in our club paid to have some made that look a bit like yours but they were mounted so the bottom was almost level with the bottom of the sills and 10mm to 15mm out. He got one decent hit in the middle and the bars bent up and side-slapped the side of his 4b. Creased the front guard, the two doors and the panel behind the rear doors. Although the damage was minor, the bar had to be bent down to be able to open the doors. The struts or mounts were weak enough that he was able to bend the bar down by bouncing up and down on it.

When I made mine, I put gussets on the struts to give them more strength.

RHS is the go. Bashed mine heaps only the paint comes off.

I'm going to make mine out of 40x40mm heavy wall but I'm going to make both sliders as one piece with the tube running under my chassis. This will be stronger than mounting off the side of the chassis and also provides space for the transfer case and sub tank so I don't have to lift them to put the bash plate on. The outer tube will be 60mm tube though to fit in with the tray and winch bar. It's gotta look good too
