I have a warn high mount winch on a 75 ute.
My problem is the free-spooling. I pull the knob out (which is on the opposite side of the motor) & it wont free spool out.
The only way it will free spool is if I stick my hand down the side of the winch & hold the lever off the brake housing. This is extremely hard to do & dangerous, plus it doesn't make free spooling a one man operation.
So the only way I can wind the cable out is with the motor.
Obvisously something isnt right, but what is it??

warn high mount questions
2005 GU3 Patrol ST Ute
the high mount i believe has the fastest motor unspooling mechanicsm..
Quite quick in unwinding...
My freespool knob doesnt work on the hi mount either.. ive only unwound it with the motor which is quite fast in my opinion.
Unless its a comp 4x4.. i wouldnt really worry, or if you have the time to pull it apart and fix it.. then go for it

The other major contributor to lack of free spool is misalignment of the drum and the end carrier plate causing too much friction. Any tweak in the bar will cause this. The best way to eliminate this, besides a stronger winch bar, is tie rods as per low-mounts. These are mounted to the carrier plate and the gearbox and help to keep everything parrell and straight.
Hope this helps
