drum to disc conversion
i have a 45 series with drums all round and was after converting the fronts to disc's, i have also been told that i should do something about my wheel bearings as there starting to vibrate, i was thinking of doing a complete front end swap, eg, disc brake set up bearings dif etc...
can anyone give me ideas on how i should go about it and what price the conversion would be worth???
cheers...

u need to buy a disk brake setup .
1x swivel hub kit.
change the master cylinder to suit disk brakes .
u can also update the rear diff so it only got 1 wheel cyl per side .
as it's got 2 per side now .....
i have got a new master cylinder $100-00 .
the backing plates on the late models have 4 bolts ...
but yours will have 8 bolts ?
send pm if you need more info ....

i bought a cheap 75 series diff .. unbolted the swivel hubs of the 75 diff and bolted them onto my 45 front diff then swapped the master cylinder to 75 series ......... the only thing you will have to check is if your 45 has coarse or fine spline CVs (will need to swap to fine spline if you have old coarse spline ones)

i cant remember how much the 75 series discs cost me ... but if i were you , i would harass your local wrecker for a 75 diff , even one that has a bent housing , cause all you will need is the swivel hubs/discs
the master cylinder i bought new $80 to $100 (cant remember)
BTW not tryin to insult your intelligence......... the swivel hub is where the diff pivots it unbolts off the diff by un doing the 4 bolts top and bottom (where your steering arm connects)
when you swap them over you will be abled to replace the swivel hub bearings etc (buy a swivel hub kit ... it has all seals etc)
and you might as well do the wheel bearings too

Im here for the sausage!
t
mate, if it were me doign this again....
i would save a few more $$$$$.
buy 60 series diffs. get extra width and brakes all in one hit.
then sell yours to recover some of the cost. sounds alot more work, but i wish i had done it all in 1 hit mate.

swapping the swivel hubs is by far the easiest way to do it
not unless you have the ability to do a complete diff swap ...... but you dont really gain much from a diff swap ... not unless you are planning major suspension lift , then extra diff width will be an advantage.
(i expect flammage for that comment)
rear discs are better than rear drums BUT arent really necesary with standard size tyres
you will definately need a master cylinder from the same model vehicle as the front discs ... OR the discs wont have the right brake fluid flow
IMO stick with the rear drums .... 45s had larger drums than most other cruisers so front discs /rear drums will be the best way

i helped my brother do a diff swap awhile ago, but now he has moved to adelaide and i can't contact him coz he is on feild work, i could swap the whole diff set up from a 55 series as i have one in the shed, that would fix my bearing issues but wouldnt help me with the disc convertion,
still undecided which way to go,
cheers

I have a set of 60 series ventilated front discs with hubs and knuckles.
Very cheap at $200 the lot.
Came off my 40 when I swapped to 60 series complete axles.
You can contact me at simon@4wdtv.com.au
