4.625 diffs and 33's
4.625 diffs and 33's
Having trouble sourcing 4.3 diffs, how would I go with the above combo or would I be wringing the guts out of the motor. TD42 is a little sluggish when pulling camper with 4.11 centres. With the 4.11s I am about 2200 rpm at 100 in 5th, this means I die in the arse when a hill is nearby. Of course if I have to I can go to 35's with 4.6s.
Cheers

Just read back on some previous info - Thanks Turps - and it seems to suggest that from 4.1s to 4.6s I would increase revs by approx 600 rpm if I stay with 33's. Thats fairly screaming for a diesel.
Figures I got:
31 to 33s increase tyre size by 7%
33s to 35s increase by 6%
4.11 to 4.33 increase by 6%
4.33 to 4.625 increase by 7%
With 4.6s and 33s I am "overgearing" by 6%
This figures may be completely incorrect - feel free to flame me - if you have correct calculation

i run 33s as a daily driver and have 4.625 ratios in my GQ petrol. when sitting on 100km/h my rpm is only around 200 more than it should if i had 35s though i sit on 110km/h most of the time according to the speedo.
but with the 35s the speedo is spot on.
hope this helps.
hopefully getting some 35s as a daily driver soon to stop the over reving.

Fill in 5 of the 6 values, and it will tell you the other one.
Very handy for calculating the RPM you sit at...at 100
For me, with a 4sp MQ 4.6:1 diffs:
100km/hour on:
Taken from my car: 31" is 3100rpm (means the 31's are more like 30's)
33" is 2800rpm
35" is 2600rpm

if funds permit, go turbo,
but i reckon 4.6's and 33's you'd be screaming down the highway, keep looking for 4.3s or go 4.6 and 35
If funds permitted I would have 4.6s, 35s and turbo

ive got a set of 4.3 id swap for 4.6 if only you where closer
whats freight, just keeps someone else employed - pity I dont have any 4.6s

Have just changed 4.1 to 4.3 in mine + lockers (do it all at once saves $100s) TD42 auto, and the difference on and offroad is interesting if not suprising..
I now have a useable Low range offroad for downhills compared to previous.
110 on the freeway is now perfect, 120 is also easy... the Tynong Hills used to really kill it going east, but now its kewl.
I think going to 4.6 for crusing on hwy would suck arse. But if your only going to have it as an offroad/weekend hack, it wouldnt matter.
Look around for 4.3's they will turn up, I waited 6 mths for mine, then was offered 3 sets in 1 week
just be paitent.
New are around a grand an end. Not sure about aftermarket 4.3s

Vehicle is being set up for touring around OZ next year, is already locked f & r, have been looking for 4.3 on and off for about 12 months
saw these as well, and just missed the action, would prefer to have 4.3s but is easier to get 4.6s
Cheers

from running 3.9s and 34 JT2s and then going 4.6s and 35 pedes, i love how it holds the car back SO MUCH when going down hills as before it used to run away and get a bit hairy sometimes, even better with the 33s on!
all i need to do now is get 35s as roadies to have the gearing and speedo normal, thats the only part that sucks.
might put the 31s on one day and see what it is like going down hills offroad.
although road use would suck ass!

IMHO if your touring, go with the 4.3s. If your doing outback touring, and remote touring, you want speed at lower RPM, but still have power/torque.
One trick, borrow a set of 31's, run them with your current 4.1's and that will be how your car goes with 4.3's and 33's speed/rpm wise...
If you can, borrow a set of 29's put them on, go for drive, and thats how it will be speed/rpm wise with 4.6.
Both may not be 100% exact, but will give you the best idea before dishing out lots of $

Prob a bit more mucking around than intended- I will look locally first
If you know someone with aftermarket rims but std size tyres with a Hilux borrow theres. Hiluxs came out with 29" tyres. Its just that std toy rims are about 1mm to small in the center to fit on a Nissan.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
