I have repaired and galvanised a couple of them in the past. Repair is very easy if you can use a mig and a grinder. Expect a bit of warping rippling of the thin sections when galvanising - but that shouldn't effect the overall straightness (more than LR's tolerances anyway). SIII firewalls are not as strong as IIA - have heard some stories of them warping too much, but have seen plenty of successfully galvanised ones.
I have seen one or 2 homemade ones before, but only for S1's (simpler design). It would be a lot of work to make one for a IIA or SIII.
