what type of bender are you going to use to bend it? if using pipe bender i think the best would be 32nb or maybe 40nb meduim wall black pipe. but I'm no expert.

The majority of what people are using is 32nb med (3.2mm wall) for exos and some are using 40nb med for the main hoops. I use a mix of 32nb light, med, and heavy depending on the application. The easiest (cheapest) way to get good bends with this material is to use a hydraulic bender like you have but get some Dawn brand bending dies for the material you wish to use ie 32 or 40nb (this is how they are stamped). With these you can achieve a 90 deg bend with the slightest of kink on the apex. You wont experience this for bends less than 90 deg.

4runners, like any full bodied rigs, are difficult to build a strong cage around as it's difficult to cross brace effectively. I'd suggest relying on it as protection for the car from flops, rocks and trees and not a "roll cage" even though it will probably take lightish rolls with only minor structural deformation.

Good luck!!

Post by slinky »

yes i did try last night i had a singh poll its about 2" thick and about 1half thick {wall} and it kinks at about 60 angle so i might use the oxy first then put it in the bender what do u think

if using

Post by tuf045 »

if using the dies that came with the bender you will have to make a shim or sleeve so to speak. the way some do it with 32nb is to get 2mm alumium and put this in the bender die and use an offcut of pipe to press this into the die and should bend heaps better. But you will still get slight ripples in the inside radias of the bend also with that bender you will get dents in the top of the pipe because the rollers are not machined to suit this pipe.

hope this helps

I would suggest against heating the pipe to bend it as you will be reducing its strength as you're essentially stretching the material which will make it thinner. Not to mention what tempering effect it would have. You'd be better off spending the $100 (or there abouts) to get the Dawn dies. ;)

thats the way

Post by tuf045 »

mate i just tap it with a hammer lightly I havn't found an easier way than that yet. Some times you can just tap the pipe on the ground and the die comes off.

hows the cage coming along?
