turbocharging a 3B
Have a land cruiser 40 series with a 3B engine - that would be a 3.4 liter DIESEL engine. Any ideas on the hows and whats of turbocharging it?

I did mine pretty much the same. I used a Garret TO3 and also added and oil cooler. Something that is a must ( I know BJ had one too ). After it was all setup and running I took it to the Dyno guy and got him to adjust the injector pump to run better. Ended up putting a new diaphram in the pump while I was at it as the old leather one was letting a little to much oil through. Made one hell of a difference.
The engine hade 150 000 km on it when I turbo'd it and i put another 100 000 km on it before I sold it and she was still going strong...

It really is an easy thing to do to a 3B though.
people always asked me how i did it, too lazy to take my own photos so i send them yours and say easy

BJ ON ROIDS, got news for you. Turns out turbocharging a 3B ain't a small project. Well, at least according to some gearheads i talked to over here. They say the stock 3B engine, being a diesel, is one with a high compression ratio (3.4 liters with a ratio of 29:1). Fitting it with a turbocharger will further boost the intake pressure and will eventually result in damage to the engine. To compare, a 13BT has a compression ratio scaled down to 23:1 to accomodate the extra boost of the turbocharger. So to configure a setup that will not only be powerful but will also last, nothing short of a top overhaul will do: piston rings, cylinder heads, etc. In short, something has to be done about scaling down the compression ratio accordingly. I bet this will take a lot of math, fitting the right turbocharger unit, tweaking, and fine-tuning.

yeah for sure it will increase wear
to reduce compression, stick two head gaskets in there. I ran my turbo to 17psi on a STOCK 3B with stock internals and 29:1 compression ratio, if the motor doesnt blow it will make more power.... serisously, i have turboed maybe 5 n/a engine without touching them and never had a problem, toyota builds them strong, obviously if you turbo one and blow it up its not my problem, but for the most part they hold together, if they blow they were probably old and neede the top end overhauled anyways.
Buy my 3B... turbo is setup and done. Make me an offer.... I also have a complete spare one which has all the parts and is ready for overhaul... but also has seals and stuff..... Make an offer on that one if you like, just throw in two headgaskets during the rebuild for a poor mans compression ratio reduction.

mte 3bs are one of there better motors to turbo stock cuase they have oil injection noozles onto the rods anbd i think pistons to. diesels are also a very strong motor in build wise to a petrol engine. they are easyly turboed with out any modifcations to then. i just turboed mine cost me 800 for a kot from the wreckers an it was almost new guy put it on an rolled heis car not long after it. it runs 4psi stock but will turn it up when i take it to be tuned to suit the turbo. if you want you can run a fuel aneriod which componsats the fuel for the pressure you run. but any deisel will a turbo with out engine modifications the higher compression ratio just make for power for the same boost as to a lower compression engine on the same boost
Guess i'll just have to wait and see. Haven't driven my 40 on a 3B. It's still on the build. Bet it'll be a big difference compared to the B that was formerly stuck in it. But I choose to believe you guys about the turbo thing. Actually saw one with a setup similar to BJ on Roids'. Only difference is the engine was a 3B for a Dyna, if there is such a thing. They say you could tell by the orientation of the intake manifold, which in this case is to the side and not upwards. Hey BJ on Roids,
Sorry dude! Can't take you on your offer. As it is, I'm running on empty. Besides, I'm way up here in the Philippines!!!

Dude are you one of the 100,000 people i have emailed pictures of my turbo setup too? it was very simple and took me an afternoon and was very cheap, As I was a young struggling student. BUT a guy is coming to buy mine this arvo.
