L28 Turbo Question

Post by Patroldude »

Ok - I was hoping someone can tell me - what should I expect to pay for a complete L28 turbo set up with carb set up on it - all manifolds and regulators etc etc?

Just ball park figures? Assume the turbo is Garrett n nearly new.

Thanks in advance.

Hard one to answer that.

The setup might be worth $2000 but it depends on what you offer to what the guy will take.

It would be a custom setup, how many hours to build manifolds & such?
Brand new turbos are not cheap either.

Whats the guy asking for it?
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............

It will have to be a aftermarket turbo set up if you want to go into carby. The L28 came out standard with a turbo in the injected version which comes out of a Nissan 280ZX. I found this guy to be helpfull when i put my injectin on and when i need parts, give him a call he might have a set up there.

Hmmm

Post by Patroldude »

Yeah I know Sports Classic... I have dealt with em personally before and find em to be really pricey hey. and I mean REALLY PRICEY! $380 for set of L28 extractors? Not even mandrel bent etc? I am not sure if he has sold it to Carlos but is he a big guy? Width not heigh. Nice enough but I must admit I was after Z parts not patrol stuff. They wanted $125 per injector too if its the same mob in the same place....

I am only wondering if its worth it though as I am looking at bying one with one on and doing it for the missus so we can get rid of her Hyndai piece of crap but I don't want ehr in a turbo petrol as its gonna be faster than mine. (TD SWB) I just wanna rough guess as to what I can get back for whole turbo set up but haven't come across one before... was hoping to sell it all for $700 or so but thought I should find out what they are worth hey. No point trying to sell stuff for $700 second hand if its only worth $500 new. I know snails are $$$ expensive but its all new n never run yet due to lack of time but at same time a truck I chased for 2 years is up for sale yet again.... need to divert $$$ into that if I am gonna really get it hey.

Thanks for everyones help though - I only know basics of turbo stuff.

Mark Costello - would of liked to have met you if you came to mine on sunday - espec. now I have seen pic of your rig... VERY tasty mate. Gives me some inspiration to get stuck into mine again....

Yeah it would have been good to meet up, but due to unforseen problems i couldnt. We should organize it some other time. I should have it at tuff truck aswell if you want a look.

You'd really struggle to find one of the L28 turbo engines in any importers yard. While they were a factory option they were pretty rare (japanese model was mainly the 2 litre L20 turbo six) so while they do exist expect it to be a pretty high price.

I'd also think that the price of an RB30T or RB20T might make them a serious option... and RB20T at 140-160kw in stock form has a hell of a lot of bang for buck.

I think overall by the time you buy an intercooler, turbo (L28 one would eb so old as to be stuffed), aftermarket EFI and pay for tuning either of these would be a better and cheaper option.

Plus if you junk a motor and RB20 will be cheaper.

Thanks beastmaster and all otherc concearned...

The age of the turbo is not an issue as itsw new out the boz but hasn't been run yet.... as far as the rest of it goes - keep it simple is what I find works best off road/value - I am merely probably just going to sell the turbo set up off this patrol if the guy ever calls me backl hey.... BUT I am off to pick up my other new patrol tonight.... agani a petrol but I chased this truck for like 2 years or so and want to make the most of it and will pick her up tonight. Time to update my signature I think.

Ohhhh... my misunderstanding. I thought you were looking for one not selling one....

Carby one... you'd be looking at the price to manufacture manifold + cost of turbo so I think anything ~ $1000 or better would be fair.

You would be able to do it cheaper if you tried to with a secondhand turbo but the benefits of a tried and tested system and issues like getting the jetting right make it worth a bit extra.

Easier to sell if the owner can take it for a spin too.

Yeah

Yeah - I know what you mean - this used to be one of my old patrols n apparently it had been "fully prep'd" for paint and all rust plated up.... Well I get there n the turbo is on it but the car isn't running and the prep job, well what can I say? Total crap - bee primed sure but not rubbed back n the rust holes that were in it were there still when I had it but bigger!!! I liked the body n motor but don't want a turbo n was hoping to recoup costs - I offered him more than what its worth as I knew the motor had loads of go but was going to sell turbo to get esome money back on it hey... then he things got messy n now he is trying to sell it to another buyer.... if the other guy has any sense he will walk away as its gonna take lots of work but then again... If he does sell it - good on him I recon.

Will see after this weekend hey.
