I'm looking for a good GPS for the out back challlange this year
I was thinking of a garmin 172 big screen but i'm told there now very outdated
what are people using and recomend?
here's the requirments
*must have ext earial
*big clear screen
*be very fast acting
*dash mountable
*cross communitatable with other units
*water proof
*colour or B&W doesn't matter just as long as it's fast acting
what are people using in GPS comps these days
i'm a bit of a garmin fan myself

In all the events I've done till now including OBC, Pajero Challenges and NavRRuns I've had the pleasure of using a Garmin 128 and can recommend it as an excellent unit that fits all the requirements you're after. I think it has now ben superseeded by the 152 and now you mentioned 172, so you prolly are more up to date thaan me.
Anyway, I had the pleasure of using the Magellian FX324 in this years Pajero Challenge and reckon it beats the Garmin as it has a keypad, moving map and all the usual features the Garmin has
By the way the Garmin rides in the car with me, as will a meridain Gold for this years OBC

I have used they chartplotter that magellan use and it is good (think it is the FX324). It has a keypad so makes inputting way points very quick.
Comes in colour or B&W, so your choice there. Has EXT aierial (even comes with it so no extra cost). Is dash mountable, this is not a hand held. Dont know if it plays with other gps though.
Check here for more info http://www.magellan.com.au/
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
how much functionality do you want....
can suggest the MIG 728 as a very versatile unit,
7 " touch screen, colour....
but as a CE device it is vehicle mount only and maybe a tad overkill

They are quick refresh but don't try loading too much map data into the FX324 because that does slow down menu/nav screen switching (in my experience).
I've put some of my experience in this other thread so as not to hijack ...
