Fifth gear dropping off it's shaft is fairly common in the early five speeds - I'm surprised one has lasted this long! Don't know about the second gear problem...

Check the Tech thread - in the early models I think your chances are good that the diesel gearbox will fit, but I don't know for sure.

Personally, I'd be reluctant to buy a second-hand box - what's the chance that it won't happen again? Can't you sell one of your kids to pay for the rebuild? :D
