Depends.. i have penrite HPR diesel 20W-60 atm in mine (hilux 2.4 diesel), coming from the HPR Light Diesel (15W-60?), i will tell you right now there is a performance difference between the two weight oils.
On the heavier grade oil it feels a bit sluggish to pick up revs, starts rougher when cold, however blows less smoke when its cold..
A mate of mine has used shell helix full synthetic in his 120 series prado since new, and swears by it... Both Penrite and Shell are very good oils...
Really comes down to personal preference... me? Penrite...

I used to use penrite till my sponsor got me to try MOTUL. The engine ran a lot quieter with the MOTUL than Penrite. Just my 2c.

its all much the same. there are only like 2 oil refineries for out lubrication oils in aust as far as i know. the only difference is the polymer additives which don't last all that long anyway. i say go for the cheapest of the good stuff and change it more often

Shell synthetic fro diesels? Never heard of it. I used Penrite in the MK Turbo. Yes the 20-60 did make it a bit sluggish. I have heard some engine rebuilders say that penrite carbons up the engine. However I also think the type of use determines the grade of oil. I have always thought the RX Super is a bit thin, but seems to go well with it - plus I pay $50 per 20ltr drum so I will stay with it. Rimula - i used it once and it chewed oil in the MK so went back to Penrite. I am not sure if thicker is better? Race cars use thin oil and they get worked hard.

and the engine may blow up in under one race
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!

MOTUL is a french brand of oil and is comparable in price to most others. I have to do an oil change soon so I'll do a write up on what I find. It did make a noticable difference though compared to the Penrite I was using. MOTUL is also used in a lot of ricer cars and I didn't know they made diesel oil till my sponsor asked me to try it.

This is from the Patrol Yahoo site
There may be others that comply but I have only enquired about the
brands that are available close to me, and I stopped enquiring once
I had three choices. The question to ask is if the oil has a CALCIUM
based DETERGENT with a concentration of 3000 parts per million
MINIMUM. Magnesium based detergents used in most diesel lubricating
oils is useless in Nissans (also some Toyotas and Isuzus) The old
rule was if it was suitable for 2 stroke Detroit Diesels it was not
suitable for Nissans etc and visa versa. However that was 10 years
ago. if it applies today I do not know or care. I know what oils I
will be using.

Jeff
I have contacted Mobil to find out. They said that they will call me
back!!! I believe that possibly the only Delvac oil to meet the
requirements is DELVAC 1 15-40 which is a synthetic blend. Honestly
at present I would stick with known compliant oils, CALTEX CJX,
CASTROL J MAX or PENRITE HPR Diesel 15. I am in the final stages of
rebuilding a TD42 intercooled turbo engine. (it will be run-in and
tested on an engine dyno before Christmas)There are a couple of
photos of it in the photo section of this site. I have researched
the subject of oils thoroughly and I will use the Penrite product.

and more...
Since all of this discussion about oils I have been in contact with
Nissan. They informed me that unles the oil used in a TD42 contained
the detergent type and concentration that I referred to earlier then
it could not possibly meet the required specification. They went on
to add that if an engine failed while still under warranty a sample
of the oil would be taken for analysis and if it did not comply the
warranty would be voided. They then added that the oil manufacturers
do not always recomend the correct product even when a compliant
product is in their product range.
Does Delo 400, Delo 500 or Delo Gold contain 3000 PPM of Calcium
based detergent? If it does not then I for one will never use it. I
will use Delo CJX while it remains available and if that is going to
remain the case all the better.

thats not really any thing to do with the oil that was used.
it's more that only one type of oil was used and it was changed every 5000.
my old mans EB falcon did 300 000km and did a headgasket soo we thought lets rebuild it. and found the same thing inside no wear at all.
not even slightly scuffed pistons.

I agree, if they would have used air filter oil, or chain lube, or $2.00 for 400ltr Black and Gold special oil, it would have looked 100% the same...

now your just being a dickhead
what i was getting at is if you pick one of the major brands and stick with it and change it every 5000km with a filter the result will be the same
what does oil analysis cost ?? If the price is not to bad it is a great way of getting a good snapshot of how well the oil is working .. and wha state the motor is truely in ..

Normally I use penzoil which i didnt last time as I was recomended penrite but seemed to get a lot of oil out of the blowby. Just did an oil change as I do every 5000 but this time I went in to get my normal Penzoil but they only had one container so they recomended Motul. My first reaction was I dont think so and to make matters worse it was made in bloody France. But he said one thing that made me buy it, which may have being a sales pitch "bear in mind diesels are big in europe" good point so of I walked out with 10L of French mushed up frogs legs thinking, I wish I hadn't bought this. Anyhow the first thing I noticed pouring it in, after I had checked the sump plug twice was the colour and it seemed thicker. When I started it up the engine did seem a lot quieter but time will tell how good it is. My diesel has done just over 200000 but only done around 45000 in nine years since i got it and a turbo was fitted around 2 and half years ago. I change oil every 5000 but proberly should do on time rather than km's.toughnut wrote:MOTUL is a french brand of oil and is comparable in price to most others.
