MTR's vs Pro Comp X Terrains ???

Post by Bitsamissin »

Ok the time is near. Cheezy has agreed to do my body lift and the old 33" BFG's just have to go.........................
Will be able to run 35"s after the b/l and I've narrowed it down to these two tyres. Size will be 35x12.5x15". The MTR's are slightly cheaper but I'm not too fussed about that.
I just want to hear peoples opinions/experiences/stories etc to help me decide which one. The MTR is gaining in reputation but I've been hearing good things about the Pro Comps to. Looking for an allrounder here with reasonable onroad manners and wear characteristics.
Or has anyone got any other suggestions ???

go the mtr's

better for vic conditions & with the 'silica compound', they last on road..

what are you doing with the 33" bfgs? are they muddies? if so how much tread?

I am asking as I am looking for a set of cheap tyres..

Go the X Terrains, used them the first time on the weekend and they worked a treat all around at Cruiserkhana. I would recommend them to anyone. I was a bit sceptical at first, but now I'm impressed!!

Robbie, I'll probly keep the 33" muddies for camping trips/light 4x4 work and the 35"s will be for the harder club trips- sorry.............

i haven't run xterrains but i've got a set from steve roly. they look the biz and actually look quite big whereas mtrs look really small (yes even the 37s look small). one difference between the two is that the xterrain tread is directional but i'm sure it'd still run well reversed. all this is just bullshit as i haven't actually driven with either. but i have to say they'd both do all right. i think the final decision would come down to which you can get a better deal on.

neither work well for victorian mud.

If you are going to run 2 sets of tyres anyway, just don't compromise on the second set.

swampers or simex's end of story :)

I found the X Terrains are a good all rounder. They are quiet and handle well on the road, but they won't work as well as a swamper in the really wet conditions, but that's the kind of comprimise you've got to make.
Think about it, how often do you really need to run swampers??
We only do in competition or really wet drives (about 10% fo the time).
Could you imagine driving on swampers daily *#@* that.

Well my 2¢....If you're keepuing the 33" muddies for street & light trail then go for a set of 36" TSL's or Q78's of the harder stuff - should perform frikken miles better in the mexican slop.....

one other difference is that 35 xterrains can be run on 8" rims whereas 35 mtrs are supposed to run on 8.5" rims (which are very difficult to engineer). this is not important if you're only using them as a trail set. but if you want engineering, xterrains are the go. and then you'll be too lazy to swap tyres and just keep running the 35s anyway.

It depends on what you want the tyres for,

The Xterrains i had on the patrol were the Best dedicated road / offroad tyre i have ran. The swampers i had were better offroad, but the noise and shakes form the swampers is a bit much when you want to do a day run and have a lot of road km's to do.

The Xterrains were better than a BFG Muddy on the road in both wet and dry and the Xterrains are also exceptional in gravel.. I didn't do much mud with mine but when i did i found them to work well.

They are miles ahead of the BFG range, and the Cooper range (which i have only tried Cooper ST)

Darren McRae has ran cooper St, Goodyear MTR, BFG mud and All terrains, Swampers and Xterrains.... He feels the Xterrain is his tyre of choise for road use etc, and the MTR which its slightly better sidewall is more suited to the outback touring type tyre. Either way you will not be dissapointed with either an MTR or an Xterrain.

Personally, i would go the Xterrain again over the MTR, as i was happy with mine, and never really had a sidewall stake issue in the past, BUT i run swampers in the real tough stuff.

A compromise is bad enough – do not double compromise. It costs you money and will only disappoint you in the long run.

Looks like i may be the only one who doesnt like the Xterrain.
I have never seen a tyre with a weaker sidewall. I know so many guys running these that have sliced or torn the sidewall out of them. And they dont drive that hard. And i used to think BFGs were bad for this.
I dont know of anyone holing the side of an MTR yet.
My boss has run MTRs on road everyday and offroad at least once a month with our custom electronic traction control fitted for atleast 40thousand Ks and they still look great its looking like 100thou without a prob on this set will be likely.

I have been running 35" MTRs on My 94' GQ LWB, and they have performed extremely well in Mud, on Snow, on Rocks, and all around.

Very quiet on the road, excellent handling, great response.

I towed 4 trucks stuck in 2+ meters of snow, when the defenders and Wranglers equipped with Simex and other tires were hardly managing themselves

I havn't had any trouble with the bfgs yet .... running them on road and off road ... and giving them a hidding all the time for the last year .... still got 50% tread on them only puncher I got was a nail at work ...
and where I go wheelin is on the moutain with all sharp rocky shit
they work quite well at 15psi ... only had cooper stts and bfg m/ts
stts wore really quickly lasted only 12 months and ripped the sidewall on one of them
no probs in the mud either ... clay sticky shit ... plenty of power to keep the treads clean all good :finger: .... downfall .. to expensive ...
gonna try mtrs next ..

i own a set of 33" BFG mt's and quite often run borrowed sets of 35" BFG mt's and MTR's, being bigger tyres than mine they both make my rig perform better, but the MTR's work better, the hook up quicker and better than a BFG, but on the other hand then only place my BFG's have stopped me going is up rocks that have got mud on them,

but the point about the pro comps being able 2 run on 8" rims is a good 1, as far as im aware they r the only 35" tyre that can b run LEGALLY onroad coz u CANNOT get wider than an 8" rim engineered ive tried

but after all that i gunna run 37" MTR's they suit the terrain i drive on and i dont use my rig as a daily driver so i dont care

I have found that 315/75 R16s are the only 35s that are listed as being OK on 8 - 10" rims... even though they are wider than 35 12.5s... weird.

This is true for most of the big name tyres. Looks like you will have to go 16" rims.

sorry ruff but as you know I import and sell the pro comp range, to date i have over 2000 tyres on the road and the only tyres i know of with sidewall holes are a total of 4. this is not a bad averidge, i see thousands of 4wd tyres every year and to say any tyre is weak is not a fair or accurite statement. the fact of the matter is if you want tough off road tyre buy bias ply if you want handiling and control buy a radial. and just a reminder i see every brand of 4wd tyre with holes in the side, we have a factory with an area dedicated to major repairs on tyres, we see tyres from over 75 tyre dealers every day. the pro comp tyre is sold to the serious offroader, not Mr on road take the kids to frazer once a year type.

35-12.50r15.
35 is the tyre height in inchs,
12.50 is the section width that is the side wall wide when the tyre is mounted on an assigned rim width, this is not the tread width.
the symbol R denotes the tyre as a radial
15 is the diameter of the rim which the tyre is mounted.

315-75r16
315 is the section width in mm so this tyre is 315 mm wide
75 is the aspect ratio, this means the side wall height is 75percent of the width.
R once agian denotes radial construction
16 is the rim diameter.

315-75r16 is infact about the same physical diametions as a 35-12.50r15.

the tendancy for 16 inch rims is a accomodate the larger brakes being fitted to most new vehicles.

as a guide

265-75r16 is 32"
285-75r16 is 33"
307-70r16 is 33"
315-70r16 is 35"
325-75r16 is 37"

hope this helps

Here goes you need to think inches and centimetres Luke.

as discussed 315 is the cross section width 75 is the percentage of the aspect ratio in height. Work out the percentage double it and convert it to inches and add it to the rim Diameter.

ie 75% of 315 = 236.25/25.4 = 9.3011 = 9.3x2= 18.6+16=34.6

34.6in tyre
