60 2H ENGINE SWAP

IM LOOKING TO TAKE OUT MY OLD 2H ENGINE OUT OF MY 60 AND PUT IN A 14BT OR 13 BT HAS ANYONE DONE IT OR HEARD ABOUT THIS ?
IS IT A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER OR SHOULD I REBUILD THE 2H :?

better off getting a 12HT mate (if ya can get one for reasonable price)

4 litre six (same block as 2H) as opposed to a 4cyl 3.4(13bt) or 4cyl 4litre? 14BT.

id be willing to bet the 14BT would be as dear as a 12HT anyway. so id definbantly go for a 12HT

there are 4cylinder 3ish litre turbo diesels that were fitted to HJ60's (in japan), id say they were 13BT's. YOu can find them in some jap imports. So it is definantly possible. Wether or not they had adifferent gearbox is another question.

easiest option is definantly a 12HT. same engine mounts, similar exhaust, prolly just need the dump pipe of a HJ61 for exhaust to bolt up. And best poart it will bolt directly to your gearbox.

i turboed my 2H, spent a fortune on injector rebuild and stuff,

new radiator cracked and blew up the motor (bit of an exaggeration, but definatley farked it) so, with all the money already spent on the turbo, i went for a recon 2H, had all sorts of trouble with the wakers who did the rebuild, many months later, we were up and running.

motor is now (3 years and 120000kms later) running sweet as (boost around 12psi) and i'm happy as...


but for the moneyi could have got a 6.2 chev :roll:

i do agree a chev would be the go though.

Anyone know the dollars to get a hold of the 1 T bits of 12HT, a while back my exhaust tail got wounded so i put on an exhaust (from the tail of the headers) to suit a turbo. Nice note and a bit more go but.....

The Chev 6.2 is about the same cost eh?...mmmmmmm :?

The 12HT has a different head (direct injection), obviously a different injector setup, a different pre-heating system, and piston skirt cooling. The injector pump may be different on the 12HT also, although im not sure of this.

You could probably upgrade a 2H to a 12HT engine, but youd need the head ($1000+), injectors ($500), the difference in the oiling setup ($?) plus then the manifolds and turbo, if you can find the manifolds they will be unlikely to sell them seperate from the motor. If you can find a blown 12HT with a good head (unlikely), you may be able to use the bare 2H block and build it up to a 12HT.

With regards to a chev, from what i understand they cost upward of $10k for a drive in drive out conversion. Even if you do it yourself, you will be unlikely to get out of it for much under $10k.

A 12HT is probably going to cost you $7-$8k for either a low K import with warranty or a rebuilt one. Im not sure if a rebuilder will swap a 2H for a 12HT but anything is possible. If your 2H is shagged, you are unlikely to get more than about $500-$1000 for it in an exchange deal.

Grabbing a blown 12HT is something ive been considering for an upgrade to my 2H, although you will pretty much have to buy a head since if the engine is blown, its more than likely taken the head with it (if that wasnt the part that blew). Otherwise all the 12HT stuff should bolt up to either an early or late model 2H block, so finding a blown 12HT would be very good. Im sure we are not the only ones with this idea though :)

With a bit of tweaking and an intercooler a 12HT is very capable of producing 150KW(flywheel) which is double the power of a factory 2H. The 80 and 100series multivalve 1HDT only produces about 150kw, although they are ofcourse capable of more.

Adding a turbo to your rebuilt 2H is also an option, and if you can find a kit at the wreckers or second hand you should be able to turbo your 2H for about $2000 with a rebuilt turbo.

A turbo 2H with intercooler and exhaust should be quite capable of up to 120kw before the indirect injected head, and lack of piston skirt cooling becomes an issue.

The rebuild is going to cost you between $3k and $4k (exchange full rebuild is about $3,850). Add a turbo for $2000 and you have a 40% gain in power for under $6k. Add a big exhaust and an intercooler for about another $500 and you should hit 120kw (60% gain).

All of these options, 12HT, turbo 2H and chev6.2/6.5 are likely to stress your gearbox and its likely that will be the next to fail. Reco exchange are $1500.

Fitting a 12HT shouldnt be very difficult at all, Few trips to wreckers for unforseen parts, and everything shoiuld bolt up and drop in.

Chev6.2 means engine mounts, gearbox adapters, change of clutch etc etc, and of course engineers signature.

If i had the cash id definantly be goingt the 12HT route with a phat exhaust and intercooler.

AFAIK the 2H and 12HT transmissions are the same so there wont be any g/box worries.
And as long as you maintain the driveline, a 6.2 wont put much more strain on anything. But with anything, that depends on how you drive it. I've had no driveline probs caused/associated with the 6.2.

I have contemplated the 14bt swap for my FJ73 and the prices are reasonable at $5500 for the engine it is a strong contender against the 12HT on paper .... and it 4Cyl Rego then for your 60 series

Hi guys. Been reading your thread here. I've got an 86 Factory turbo HJ61 cruiser Sahara that unfortunately has some rust in the roof and needs a new paint job so whilst it's insured for $16,800 I couldn't sell it for that much so I was thinking of wrecking it ... it has travelled around 370,000 kms. Recently I had the turbo rebuilt and had the big end and main bearings replaced (they were able to do this with the motor in the car).

Anyway, I was thinking of wrecking it as it is probably worth more for parts than to sell it complete. I contacted the wreckers and priced the motor at anything from $5000 - $8000 .... I would be happy to sell the motor for $4500 complete if anyone was interested.

how much did the bigends and main bearings cost to replace?

i assume the main seals were done aswell?

I think the bearings etc were only a couple of hundred $$ to have done ... parts are not that expensive for the old darlings ... It wasn't leaking so the seals were not done ... amazing what regular oil changes do for seal life. Also, remember that the bearings were done with the motor still in the vehicle so no, the seals were not done.

I was thinking about rebuilding the motor (I noticed the guy from Gympie sellsnew engine parts cheap), fixing the rust (only a small amount but it's in the roof) repainting the car and doing another 3-400,000kms but I want to update so I will probably either sell her complete of wreck her out.
