The box will have to come out, it sounds like the shift rails are worn.

Is the gear stick stuck in as well???

Try disconnecting the linkages and moving the gear box levers manually. It will work if the gear stick/linkage part is the problem.

Pull the gearstick boot off and try to get the stick out they wear the pins out that hold the stick in.

Pull the box out & don't be lazy!!

There's obviously something wrong or broken inside, would you prefer it to happen again in the bush??

Don't listen to half the idiots replying here as they've never had a Hilux box apart & wouldn't have a clue (I've rebuilt 3 so far)

You can undo the four bolts on top of the box around the gear lever & pull out the gear lever. Have a look & see if there is anything broken, other than that you'll have to pull the box down.

If you need help with further instructions, send me a PM.

I may be an idiot :finger:
I have found when sending recon boxes to customers that if they aren't put into gear they will select angel gear and they have to be stripped again.
This is maybe what is wrong with your mates. It has a forward gear and rev selected.
We were only hoping you didn't have to pull it out but the expert has informed us otherwise so sorry.

This is what I'm talking about!!!Image

If it was stuck in reverse & a forward gear it would be locked up completely, ie. no reversing.

The problem is in the shift rails, which means the box has to come out, even if you get it loose without pulling the box out, you're better off to strip thebox & have a good look over the shift rails.

As I said previous, would you like it to jam up in the bush, or perhaps on the beach at low tide??

Or even on the Western side of Fraser at low tide??

Do it once, do it well.

If the box has been reconditioned then you need to remome the reverse detent switch nad use a screw driver to move the shift rail manually to unlock it.
