I want to change the timing belt on my F75 Rocky. It's the DL52 Turbo Diesel, and the first time I'll be doing it.
Is there any thing that I need to watch out for, or any thing that will make it easier?
The few tips on Outerlimits 4x4 I've found:
- try not to move anything during the process (seems optimistic)
- replace the idler assembly at the same time
- basically follow the alignment instructions in the manual, remove the injectors and hand crank the confirm the alignment, before starting.
Anything else?
The other thing I was wanting to tackle was the timing - is there much in the way of tools that I need to buy for this?

Timing belt on F75 Rocky

A comprehensive instruction manual is a great help. The timing gears have a dot indented on them. Wind the crank round by hand before removing the belt so that the dots are in contact with the belt. Make sure when you buy your new belt it has marks on it which correspond with the dots on the gears. The diesel rocky has a manual tensioning device in which you insert an allen key and lever the idler against the belt and tighten the bolt. You do not have to replace the idler bearing. Checking that the bearing is ok is fine if you know what you're doing. Line up the marks on the belt with the dots on the gears. Wind the motor over by hand for a few revolutions to check the valve timing is right.
What timing do you want to tackle? Valve timing is set by the timing belt and not adjustable. Fuel timing requires specialised tools and is not a job for ametuers. Get a diesel specialist to do it.
