not a 4x4 related tech q, but a car related tech q

Post by robbie »

aye guys

I heard something funny today..

a friends excel had a timing belt changed on it, and the mechanic told her that the car will run funny because the belt is tight..

well I drove the car and it feels like the cam timing is retarded a tooth. its also popping out the exhaust like there is unburnt fuel (another eg of the retarded timing). the car is a slug till about 4-5,000rpm.

what do you guys think?

Belt being tight is a load of crap.
It sounds to me like he farked up and is trying to convince someone that knows SFA that its all good.
Take it back and tell him to fix it. With a new belt there is never any slugishness because the belt is tight. It actually cant be tighter than it should be because the tensioner takes care of how tight it needs to be.

i hope there wasn't any ticking sounds from the top of the enging for the first few hours, as the valves tap on the top of the pistons! i hope this guy was not in a business, just a backyarder, otherwise he deserves to be named, so we all know where not to go.

No this is not right as a gemini with a 30/70 cam getting valve bounced will actually cause the valves to just touch the pistons enough to leave marks but not usually bend valves.
