Im looking for a GPS to tell me which street to turn down, and can also be upgraded cheaply with the tracks i go to.
i want it to remember that what i just went through was a track and keep it listed as a 4x4 track.
also maybe a map upgrade with most 4x4 tracks around sydney etc.
is there such a thing out there to accomodate my needs?

Oziexplorer will record tracks as you move, and then later you can permanently add them to maps, you can do this with waypoints as well and add in points of interest/descriptions of tracks etc. You can scan your own maps or you can buy them digitized, i have the digital equivolent of the paper topographic maps you get at most camping shops, works well.
If you want it to tell you to turn left etc Oziexplorer doesnt do this. Youll need to run Destinator or the Navman software for this, im sure there are many other programs out there that do the same. But from what i have found programs like this are basically digital street directories which is ok if you are on the road but when you hit the trails its just a blank screen. There could be newer programs out there that cater for both types of navigation but i am not aware of them. Google is your friend

Garmin 60c/s.
You need different map software for each function but should have good coverage using both types of software.
Virtually no consumer GPS will let you add tracks to existing maps unless you go for a commercial system which = $2k+. (ie Magellan MobileMapper)
Oh, and as far as GPS systems go, there is no easy answer. Just lots of research to suit your needs ...

i just got the trackranger from advantechdesign and its great
not great for in city stuff but will show you around with the right maps purchased !
the beauty of this one is that you can grab your maps and scan them in ... calibrate it (very easy) and youve got your big land maps on your lappy as your driving through the mud
can record new tracks, take pictures of spots and put them on your maps so you know what to look for, etc, etc ....
