I notice the oil light is staying on longer and longer when I start my TD42 powered '89 GQ Patrol. It hasn't used any oil in the ~3500kms I've done since I got it though......the level is still exactly where it was on the day I picked it up. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this normal behaviour as the oil gets closer to the 5000km 'change me now' mark? Or am I possibly about to encounter an oil pump failure or something??

What brand oil filter do You use?
Both oil filters were new when I got the car. Not sure what brand.....I didn't take any notice when I got it and I'm at work at the moment, so I can't check. I *think* they're light grey coloured, but other than that I really can't be sure.
I intend to change oil and both oil filters every 5000kms.

It would be measuring oil pressure, it's just taking long to build up - so either your gallerys are a bit clogged? - try an engine cleaner (you dump oil, put the engine cleaner in, idle the engine for 20 minutes, dump and put new oil in); or try new oil; or take your oil pump out and see if it needs a rebuild/replacement.
There are a few other reasons for bad oil pressure in the L28 from the service manual so if you want me to have a look they might be the same for your engine (wouldn't be surprised). Just PM me and I'll dig them out.

Maybe it's just time for an oil and change. When I used the genuine Nissan filters, it took up to 5 seconds for the oil warning light to go off. My Nissan dealer claimed that these were teh correct oil filters for my car. I now use Fleetguard LF3659 for my TD42. The light goes off after 2 secs now.

Ah, ok. The light takes ~3 seconds to go out now, whereas when I got the vehicle ~3500kms ago, it went off almost immediately......say within .5 seconds. Perhaps it *is* just getting close to the oil change stage then. I'll see if I can get those Fleetguard filters though......they've been recommended by a few people now, including the local diesel injector specialist mob.

Taking up to 15 secs for oil light to go off.
(oil good + oil level good)
Just turned out to be a Cr@ppy brand of filters
Stick to Ryco + good oil.
Now takes a couple secs for oil light to go off.
If in doubt - change your oil + filter FIRST. Its the cheapest solution...

stay away from factory filters or rycos or any of that supershit/autocrap stuff...
they sell crap stuff IMO..
Go to a truck spares shop - qld diesel spares etc.. or a truck shop.
Give them this part number
CUMMINS FLEETGUARD LF3314 and get two of them from memory 7 dollars each..

Some cheaper filters let the oil drain back down into the sump when the car sits too long. Oil could also be getting a bit thin, time to change, maybe the past owner knowing he was selling it, didn't do it when he said he did.

Yep definitly change filter brands. Had problems with Valvoline (chinese). Changed to fleetguard - no more problems. Cost no more than cr*ppy ones.
There is a rubber anti drain back valve which stops the oil running out. Becasue they are big filters, they take a while to fill when the valve on a cr*ppy filter doesnt work properly.
The best design (most large trucks)has filter vertical, with the attachment point at the top. Oil can never drain out of filter. Oil light goes out virtually instantly with engines using this system. Makes changing filters much cleaner as well.
