Another tyre that a lot of people aren't aware of is the Mickey Thompson/Dick Cepek FCII. They are along similar application to the Cooper ST and are well worth considering aswell.

Looking at Awill4x4's ST's the other day ~12 mths old and BIG cracks in the tread, and some look like they go deep under the tread chunks. I'd take em back for their warranty, but andrew has done the rotating himself, so warranty is excrement.
They have a good rep for chipping and shit with old pharts touring on exploroz... and thats the NEW ST-Cs

If you want super sidewall strength you will have to forget the common tyres and go for All Steel Radials.

AJ in South aussie runs these.. Great for outback touring type of stuff. But up the high country they clog up REAL QUICK

His are not st-c's his are ST's. Logon to exploroz and have a look, many retired outback tourers there doing 10's of thousands of k's touring. there are people there using them. Some have had nightmare stories, others havent, sorta like any tire, car, filter, accessory...

These are the toughest of the tough Radial Tyres.
A mate of mine decided to try these after running BFG A/T's for years and absolutely hated them - he'd never had so many punctures through the tread area and ended up chucking them.

August last year I went on a trip following the QLD/NT border up to the gulf. Majority of this was done across country following GPS and no tracks. Out of 13 or 14 vehicles we ended up with sweet buggar all punctures. All of these were on Mickey Thompson.
The Camera car running the FCII (which also had a madman behind the wheel with a heavy right foot) would lap out and overtake the convoy through anything... long grass, plenty of rock and spinifex. No punctures. it surprises me that your mate had problems with these tyres and I would be interested to hear a bit more background info... get him to give me a call on 3892 2766 or email me at ryano@fourbys.com.au.

Have got Cepek FCII, they are a step up from a All terrain but not quite a Muddie.
Done 8000 on them so far, just knocked the casting pimples off them finally, given them a fair trialing on rock faces, shale etc, stony slippery creek beds, and sand dunes (actually forgot to put in 4x4 and got up high dune that others got stuck on though I'm not trying it again in case), having good traction with them, no knicks no flats so far, yet to try them in mud, though in a few water crossings they haven't slipped yet, am informed they shed the mud well by the dealer that sold them to me, he could run claws or whatever he wanted, yet he has chosen these for his 100 series himself, if the dealer goes for it then I would take it as a good sign,
NF 3.0 BLK, 2.5" suspension (HD T bars, prog coils, TJM Bullbar, 31X10.5X15 Mickey T FCII & cent locking
