snorkel

Post by Purist »

I want to put a snorkel on my rocky. It is purely for aesthetics though, as I may never be go through anything that needs one. If I did I'd get mired in for sure, as my rig is stock other than 30" tires and a k/n filter.
So, what are the advantages, and the disadvantages of a snorkel? do you lose any horses. Ignorance is bliss, but help me out here. They just look so darn cool!

snorkel=forced air induction! i say do it! hell yes they look cool, and you will likely gain a horse or 2. or atleast an easier rev range since the engine will be able to breathe more freely. and when ur goin at speeds, that sucker'll force air down. do it!

It doesnt do anything for the performance of the vehicle. All you end up with is a higher air intake for water crossing and dust avoidance on outback roads.

Just saying from my experiences.

so ur sayin that the engine doesnt breathe a bit better at higher speeds due to air being forced into the intake?

as much as i hate to say it i agree with the yank
with the more air the car breathes easier and therefore a smidge more POWER u might not even feel it thats logically speaking anyway

But there's also more restrictive piping in the inlet and more twists and turns... so you may gain a small amount at highway speeds, but what about around town and slow speed stuff??

Not trying to upset anyone, but the fact of it is that there is no noticeable difference between having a snorkel and not. I am saying this from experience, I have had my feroza for near four years, three without and one with a snorkel and there is really no difference in the performance.

If you look at a turbo car, it is likely to be running at least 6 psi of boost, there is nowhere near that amount of increase with just a snorkel for intake, let alone after all the piping of the ducts and the standard air intake box.

At best, you get a more consistent running car, as the engine is breathing the same air all the time.

Ahh rubbish!

Snorkels are atleast good for an extra 50KW at the wheels.

K&N filter an extra 100KW

Headers and sports exhaust (fully sick one) an extra 150KW

Thats 300kw more power man!

I dont know guys. I can see the theory of the increase in power but I have to say i agree with croz.

I've had my snorkel on for several months and I really gotta say that I cant notice any difference in before and after power performance levels.

My snorkel is an exact copy of croz's so maybe we both just got dud's???? :D

Its always satisfying to so a valid debate go pear shaped. :D Especially when one had input in steering it in that direction. :D

I remember reading some tests years ago conducted on an F1 race car to see the benefits of forcing air in the intake during the 80's. It did get an increase of power of something like 7hp at speeds somewhere over 200km/h, anything under that it actually killed power, considering the power of an F1, 7hp is not much increase, then think of what speeds you typically drive at.

Food for thought.

Good topic , I changed the exhaust , put headers and put the snorkel on with in a few weeks of each other and noticed a little more power , I like to think the snorkel helped with the extra gain , but what I did gain , I lost with the tyres :D :D :D
