TT rocked!
Just to clarify a few issues...
4wd TV had only 3 people there, 2 of which were on course filming and rarely were they both on the same course.
I was commentating for the DVD, had no fluoro vest and knelt out of the way whenever I wasn't being filmed.
We even tried to get one of our crew into the tower to get them off the track but were refused access.
4wd TV put in $12,000 worth of air time to support the promotion of TT. You can all complain about lack of vision but without the media coverage there would be no sponsors and no TT at all.
If you want to blame someone from the media then have a go at the photographers from other magazines that were not supposed to be there. Offroad images had an exclusive deal and was booked to supply photos for all of the mags. So why the hell was there a shooter from Jeep action and three from monthly?
From what I saw, and that's from inside the bunting, the recovery crew were everywhere and unneccesary. On top of that the so called bunting officials should have been on the edge of the course leaning on trees out of view...not standing against the course itself.
For those who couldn't make it, we will be showing highlights over the next few weeks and the DVD, to be produced by ORP, will be the best ever.

Why Winch Challenges rock,,
I have realised the best thing about winch challenges compared to TTC are that a) THe TLCC recovery team is not involved and b) THe TLCC recovery team is not involved...
When did they become the official must be used at every event recovery team. I know someone has to do it and it is damn easy to bitch when you are sitting on your fat ass. It has all been said how a few things just went too slow and where just farqed. I have noticed this at willowglen and the nissan trials. It is just painfull.

I was on the other side of the bunting too (other side of the steering wheel actually) so I was watching the course more than anything else... but there did seem to be alot of 'recovery' guys in there.
Excavators were great for many of the recoveries, but not necessary for all I would say.
There has to be a happy balance somewhere between the media coverage and keeping the crowd happy. I personally love to see the professional shots and video footage, and can't wait for it to come out.
If we want the sport to continue to grow the media coverage and support of sponsors is essential. The idea of exclusive event coverage is a great one - just needs to be enforced so that the folks who are there can see the action as well as those who couldn't make it.
And personally I think Simon (from 4wd TV) does a great job and we need more people as dedicated and passionate about 4 wheeling as is. He worked as hard as anyone last weekend, from the wee hours of the morning through to the wee hours of the morning.

All this feedback is good for event organisers to enable them to see where improvements can occur.
Not much point ranting and raving about it or they will be more likely to disregard anything usefull in the post.
Although the sites themselves can be a problem for spectator viewing [not much point getting an awesome view of a boringly easy track] there does seem to be too many officials on the tracks but i suppose there has to be some reward for putting in the effort to help out and they get a good view for their troubles... Perhaps they can be asked to keep a low profile when not doing something.
Banners are a necessary evil but they should be kept out of the line of sight from all spectators where possible ... spectators are all around the courses, not just directly in front.
Photographers and TV crews will always be in the best positions and theres not much that can be done there except keep them to a minimum.

I think the one thing that really needs to be dumped is the mud run.
Most drivers dont like it because it ruins trucks, esp for the events on sunday.

Benny and I really enjoyed the whole weekend from start to finish even when we broke sh1t we had a good crack at all the events and drove pretty well for our first comp got hit with a few big penaltys but thats how it goes placed 16th overall not bad for little truck on 37s.......
It was good talking to all the competitors and have a good chat on sunday nite with the boys ( + 2 Ladies) and a drink or 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.... and also teaching the victorians a thing or 2 How did you go with the docking thing Cheezy,Guts and did Hypo wash his dog or not

yeah guts thanks to you lot my knecks killing me from all the turning round looking for all the coloures tops And by the way you mustve been pissed cause i couldve sworn you lot were drinking woodies
But overall for my first trip to tuff truck it was awsome All the people who arnt happy bout how some things were done or handled I am glad it wasnt me cause under that sort of presuse i thought it was all conducted very well especially when the recovery team were about to rip the hydro steer from the fire truck and cheezy steped in they were more than happy to let him take rein of the recovery and not damage it more so to all involved top job ill be there next year to watch another great event

The recovery team were no where near doing that.
They were planning of taking the chain around the diff housing and below The tube that holds the hydro on. It was not anywhere near the hydro ram itself.
Cheezy just likes getting in on the action

Yea - they were looking to wrap the recovery chain around the tube that the hydro ram is mounted to... I got out to have a look and said "er, maybe that's not the best idea". The tube is as strong as hell and we bashed the crap outa it all weekend, but I didn't want to lift the entire truck off it if there was another option.
I know and trust Cheezy so I was more comfortable with having him take over the recovery from outside the car - and the recovery guys were fine with it.

Simon is right, without media coverage, the sponsors are getting minimal milage out of there advertising dollar, and without the sponsorship dollar, the event, as it is, could simply not afford to run.
Without the media, the sponsors audience is restricted to the spectators that attend on the weekend. 4wd tv have 150,000 viewers. the 3 mags have a combined readership of around 90,000 readers. These figures sell sponsorship packages. i know because i sold them.
i was running around the courses the whole weekend, i even told the recovery guys on the track at the mini wiraba to sit down, take a back seat or simply get off the course, for safety reasons and for the benefit of spectators. i should have said the same on other courses but i was simply too busy to see much of the competition action,
there should have only been offroadimages (1 per course) and 4wd tv guys (1 or 2 per course) plus 1 or 2 marshals on the course plus the competitors.
your comments on this thread will be considered for next year, thanks for the input.
by the way, spoke to 4x4 australia yesterday, their event coverage will be on the news stand by friday next week, gotta love that !

That was my second TTC the only things I found was the entry for prepaid could have been more organised to speed up the process, and the recoveries were a little slow due to them not having one person in control for each stage and lots of guys trying to do stuff but not thinking about it, need more areas so that they can pull cars out to allow faster removal, eg a zone around the track so the excavator can get in and out and around the outside easy without moving the crowd.
If you want good shots get there early and crab a seat and wait for the action to start I did and got some great shots and very pissed with my esky as a seat and standing platform to see over the crowd or have grand stands on the flat tracks for people to use.
The Friday night was poor with not being able to see the stage "do it under lights" like the mud run and no band to keep the crowds happy and I must say the band on Saturday went off really well like 2002 S*@t I'm tired still.
Now we have to build a truck to compete next year

did anybody see on the all terrain track on sunday the stupid photographer (i can't remember if he was from 4wdtv or offroadimages) nearlly get ran over by the christie brothers? he went to run behind the truck as it got stuck, and the driver jsut gunned it in reverse, because he assumed there was nothing / nobody behind him (rightfully so) and he missed this photographer by a fly's dick. everybody in the crowd yelled for the driver to stop and this young dickhead nearlly ate shit. they need to be more sensible when they are that close to trucks revving their tits off. or have lees of them on the track.

Well I must say that I had a great weekend. Thanks to everybody that has congratulated me on finally winning TTC.
It definitely was the event that I wanted to win having been 2nd 2 years consecutive, thankfully the breakages that I did have this year came at good times rather than bad.
I have put so much time & stress into my truck over the past 6 months trying to get it ready for TTC, as always their are still a few minor things that need attention & will be looked at shortly. I still haven't had a chance to look at the engine from the weekend, I over revved it at the exit of rocky horror in front wheel drive as the rear drive shaft let go oh so easily on the last step. The motor pops @ 7500rpm & does something else @ 8000rpm ( I will inform you when I check it out, hopefully a spark plug or two, or maybe a lead... worst case an exhaust valve or bent push rod.)
Overall, I think it was a great event, very well run by TTC. I'd like to see more difficult tracks next year, & definately see Mini Wiraba run in the original direction. Frame Twister was awesome, I wish my front trailing arm had not broken, I had prepared to attack the two big tyres ( after completion, for points reasons ), I had measured the 1st tyre which seemed to suit my truck perfectly, but the second was a definite unknown, but I am sure would have produced a roaring crowd & probably some damage too.

You both definitely kept me on the ball right from the start.
I knew from the start which guys would be a threat & it was definitely you both along with Glen Dobbin.

hmm the marshalls definatly needed to get their shit together, i saw one fella sit right infront of the christies (about 2inchs outside the bunting) on mini wiraba as they can over the big rock and try and get round the next corner, as they climbed the next large rock the car slid towards him, only once the car got within a foot of his head did the decide to move!!!

I wasn't at the event but from looking at pics you can see the issue of too many people on the course or in the spectators way, in clear detail.

I agree. Where you got stuck on the Mini Wiriba. Since you had alread proven you dont mind reversing on a load front axle. All they need to do was place abit of winch pressure on the rear of the Jeep and you would have reversed out no worrys.
But I did see them winch one of the Toy's out. They where using the competiters winch and the troopy as a recovery anchor. There was some bloke leaning on the bonnent of the troopy with his head almost over top of the cable.
As for running the stage.
Once the first car is out. The stage manager breifs the next one and gets them in posistion (this cant be done for all stages though). So they dont need to go near the course. Then use marshalls around the course to score and relay them back to a scorer/ timer at the start finish.
These marhsall are also trianed for recovery.
This is sorta how a group I am with run stages for winch challenges.
