the VP + VN Series 2 (and the Series 1) seem to be the favoured Commodore Engine swaps into Hiluxes...


to the point... why are the VR and VS-VT Engines not used, the VS onwards are 'ecotec' engines i was told by a mate, what does this mean in effect to the swap... and why is the VR not a common option

was pushed away from the 7M's due to a bloke telling me all about the head problems and just basically warning me right off it.

also, any reasons why the equivelant falcon engines arent used... power, size? not really my main question...

I would think it has something to do with the ECU's in VR series 2 onwards. They have a different ECU and may be harder to rewire to a car that does not have the BCM which could not be used in anythig but the original commodore. The ECU's in VR series one and below are very simple and don't have or need the BCM to make it work.

Sorry if that made no sense but it has been a long time since I worked with this stuff.

Don't know if this is the reason. But it may help a little.

sorry i am relatively engine illiterate, but am interested in learning and that...

dad will help me fund an engine conversion of an engine newer than a vn because he sees it as abetter investment :/

i am happy to have him spend his money as well as mine... just trying to find everything out!

Plenty of them around! And as I see it, next time I have to do an engine, just turf the v6 and get another one for cheap as. I stayed manual for mine. Was a few extra $$$ for clutch and the adaptor was a bit more then doing and auto, but I wouldnt have it any other way. :D

Ecotec and later engines require a more complex electrical system to operate them whereas the VN series II, VP and VR series one are simpler. I don't believe the extra cost of purchasing the ecotec motor and installing it would be justified on resale. Running a manual behind the V6 requires a suitable flywheel and ECM (engine control module). The Marks 4wd adaptors websit has a pretty comprehensive explanation of this. Manual V6 engines are woth considerably more secondhand, and I am not sure if the standard flywheel is suited to the Marks kit unmodified. It is more expensive to set your conversion up for manual and the standard hilux g/box will not handle heavy offroad use, heavy towing or clutch dumping. Marks heavy duty gear box is about $2500 and as far as I know, no one does an adaptor for the holden 5 speed to toyota transfer case. I used the auto in mine because it was cheaper than a heavy duty manual, but I would not be keen on the auto for remote area travel.

could u bootyfab up your own transfercase to manual gearbox?!?!

could it work forsay if u took the VR Series 1 for example, and the Commodore Manual Box, and then went forth with using the Clutch and flywheel from the commodore as well?!?!

hmm... i really dont want an auto///

are falcons just not used to power differences, or clearance differences, or just coz theres no mating gearboxes / tranny adapter plates?!?!

The inline six falcon motor is too long to fit in the hilux engine bay with a radiator and fan.

I don't think "booty fab" is the correct angle to approach something as technical as a gearbox to transfer case adaptor. As a fitter machinist, I am confident I could make one, however access to a milling machine, lathe and horizontal borer as well as some pretty in depth mechanical knowledge would be required. I think the time versus money ratio compared to buying the heavy duty g/box from Marks would not be justified. You don't have to use an auto, it is just cheaper and easier-your call.

IT COULD BE BECAUSE THE LATER STUFF NEEDS THE SIGNAL FROM THE KEY . THAT IS THE IMMOBLIZER THE BCM CHECKS THE KEY TO MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT ONE THEN GIVES THE ECM THE "OK TO RUN " SIGNAL

BCM = BODY CONTROL MODUAL
ECM =ENGINE CONTROL MODUAL

i no are yet to experience these problems... but the more people i talk to seem to be against the conversion...

i preced a couple of bits on this conversion however, and it looks like i can get he engine + ecu for 1100, but bellhousing no one is able to help with...?!?!

i've got a vp series 2. the marks adapter kit is great. i also run a standard
5 speed in my hilux, it hasn't given me any trouble,and we give it shit.
we done all the short course events last year , and practise regually for
winch challenges. the power is great, just do it

i went for that engine because it is readly avalable, and we
paid $900 for a complete engine , starter motor, fly wheel,
wiring loom, computer, engine pipes the lot

hey savage, why not stick to a diesel and put in a 13b or 14b turbo into your rig. more reliable and better fuel economy and you don't have to replace the rear main seal annually!!

been thinking about available options for my lux as well.

if u have the money ?!? why not spend it ??

i think its an 86 hilux d/cab. he had the conversion done by marks 4wd adaptors and cost around $9000.

he didn't use the lux g/box, he had the holden auto fitted which seems to be going ok.

give marks adaptors a call as they were quite helpful with any info he required. don't have the number though.
