Is this the end?

Post by lowndsie »

Hey everyone.

I've just purchased an 85 4runner and i am seriously thinking about selling the Fez and using the money to do the runner up.

The other option would be to keep both, but it would take me a year to mod the runner if i was to go that path.

I just dont know......I really wanna keep the Fez cause i've grown so attached to her.

hmm i guess this sorta stuff is just inevitable ... with the fez being a transitional 4wd (between begginer/ moderate .... into more serious)

ive thought about it aswell .... but dont have the money for it, ill stick to the fez for a little while yet and improve on my driving first (instead of flat foot)
then thinking of moving to a swb patrol in abotu a year or so .. pending moving out of home and money condition.

third option ... keep the 4runner for a daily driver .......
and mod the crap out the fezfor off road .. weld the front diff up
dedicated to offroad .... do you dont have to worry about keeping it daily driver stable.

yeah that could be an option too.

would be interesting to see what Paul has to say about it too. He always seems to have some "interesting advice" on these matters.

I'm already planning a 5 inch lift and a commo v8 conversion for the runner. Then tyres, lockers and some tube work. That's of course unless my wife finds out........then the money would be going towards some house furniture or something. :x

Time will tell.

I would mod the crap of the 4runner instead. Forget modifying the Feroza, period.

Jase, is the 4runner a live axle front spoa?

lol... this is why i bought a car.... roza is now NOT my daily driver, so i'm going to go down the same path toyhatsu is.... modding the hell out of it! of course, unlike you guys, we dont have to worry about roadworthiness, since just about anything goes here.

I had this problem with my Rocky, a few things decided it for me:

1. Cost: Daihatsu is pulling out of Australia, that is well known. For a long time I put up with the prices, however the final straw was when a set of rear wheel bearings took nearly two weeks to track down. I compared prices for a Hilux and it's parts and then a Daihatsu and there was no question.

2. Mods: Buy a Toyota/Nissan and you can walk into any 4x4 store and get the mods off the shelf. Works out cheaper as well, without the need for mods or tweaking. Nuff said.

3. Space: Got a growing family, needed a ute for the dogs/wood carting/fishing/gear.

Dude, you have had fun with the Feroza, but perhaps it is time to move on. Sell it, use some of the cash to mod the 4 Runner into something capable and buy the missus something nice to keep her happy. You can argue the daily driver thing, but why pay more in rego and insurance and tyres etc etc etc when you can buy a car for less outlay as a daily driver.

Just my thoughts and reasons why I bought my Hilux. Liked my Rocky, but love my Hilux.

Feroza's are pretty cheap for daily drivers- which mine is... Uses around 10 -11l /100km around town of fuel (fairly good). Insurance is cheaper than our other two vehicles. Tyres can be cheap.

Modding the 4 runner for serious off road stuff would be the go- forget the Feroza unless you want to copy Besty or Kent.

wish that was the case for me david.. insurance killed me at first when i first bought the roza.... but after a few years it went down, largely due to age, but also because it was a hard top convertable, 5 speed, 4x4, 2 doors.. sun roof.. blah blah blah. all b.s! :bad-words:

Honestly ditch the Feroza and work with the 4Runner. It is nothing more then a Hilux which have had everything imaginable done to them, parts are cheaply and readily available both replacement and any after market part you could think of. I myself now have a 86' 4Runner powered by a mighty 4Y sucks its IFS but it was to cheap to pass by in it's condition and that can be easily sorted later on with Hilux parts. It seems to run fairly cheaply, and is far more useable then what the Feroza i owned years ago ever was. The extra room is so handy.

You have had the Feroza, it's been fun, time to move on. If your wanting something to run around town in just go buy a 3cyl 1L Charade or something like that.

Croz, yeah it's a solid front mate. And i can't sell anymore rifles cause i've only got 12 left after selling two the other week. I do have one on laybuy so that'll make 13 soon. Guess it's like your fishing rod collection.......one for every purpose. :D

Well majority rules by the looks of things. Guess I better start letting go of the fez.

Hey fellas,

You could always hybrid the f#%$ out of the Fez... Ya got the solid axles... and those runner stripes are just too cool.... heh heh heh

I would sell the Fez and bitch up that fiberglass top hilux you bought. If you want a daily driver you should just get a festiva and be done with it (will suit your driving style better). Keeping 2 4bys is just plain stupid.

Like everyone has said, the availability of mods and parts cost are the factors here. Its just no contest.

Can't wait to see the bathtub in action...... don't worry Lowndsie, I'll be there to snatch you out with the lattemobile when you get hung up on a speed bump... :D :D :D

What engine is it running? I know someone with a 350 Chev running on gas if you're interested...

Good luck with it mate... and don't forget to part out what you can out of the fez.... wish I had.

Cheers
Paul

the runner's not up to where i'd want it to be before i take it out for a run. I really need to get to some of that rust and check it's reliability first. If it didnt have the rust i'd be all over it by now.

i'm not going to rush into the mods. just take my time see what happens. In the mean time, it's the Fez that'll enjoy all the runs.

Just bolt the fez body to the chassis rails..... LWB fez... that would be interesting.....

Gotta love that- the big "tough"off roaders like Toyotas rust away because they aren't galvanised..... and yet lowly Feroza's and Rocky's have galanised body panels. :?

On a sad note there's a slim possibility I might be getting rid of my Feroza  . Even sadder though, I won't be getting another 4WD if I do.

What do you want?? As good at it is to have someone to help influence you with your desicions. You know what you want to do you have already brought the truck. Why did you buy it? It is just a matter of biting the bullet and doing it. Fact is you will be spending more on the four runner if you want to drive it hard. Let's start from the most important aspect- $. How much are you willing to spend? It will be double that by the time it is done. Give yourself an annual buget towards the FR, Feroza sells for how much? This leaves you with $$ dollars to spend on FR. Most likely it will go over your feroza sale price to get it to competetive level. How much work can/will you do yourself? Would it be worth while to keep the feroza instead and swap, chop, and lock, hmmm I doubt it? I wish I had done it, Celia Barry in her vitara= unstoppable + something different. The feroza is a nice young vehicle. Some people say longer wheel base = better for certain terrain. Hmm Zooks are competing furiously along side buggies and larger trucks with a few mods and they cost a fraction of the price. Feroza has no aftermarket support a four runner has. what kind of driving will you be doing? touring, comp, weekend breakages? Terrain preference? It's a hard decision to make. Depends on how much $, effort and time you are willing to put in, do the math and match it to the best idea, write our your chart and start giving points. The winner is the one to stick to. Just don't pour money into something if you think you will regret it later, remember it is a big toy that runs on $. My opinion- Sell both buy a zook and a daily driver spend no more than you have already. It is your choice though you only live once, what do YOU want?

Finances... Have three vehicles between the two of us; logic says one has to go.

Am trying to sell one of the others, but I doubt I'll get a decent price for it; and the wife doesn't want to sell her Excel.

I've bought another 4wd , I ended up getting a 92 , 3.1 ltr intercooled Jackeroo :D :D :D . We've still got the " Big - Rig " , it's now been retired to be the humble shopping cart . The reason we got the Jack is because we have 2 growing boys and we need the room and ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, you can buy stuff for them :D :D :D
