diesel turbo tech ~melb~

Post by YankeeDave »

after someone who can wind up my turbo and set up the pump correctly.
Just running std 8psi on it.
want to go up to around 10 or 11 psi.

after searching it seems like Diesel tec in lillydale is good, but was wandering if there is someone closer to where I am in the dandy/ frankston area?

an no not running an intercooler yet.

just need a bit more ponies for the 37's

I doubt you will find a shop to do it unless you also fit an intercooler. As you increase boost you dramatically increase the risk of engine damage as the inlet charge is hotter and cylinder pressures and combustion temperatures go through the roof - there is a diminishing return for safe performance with higher boost. 8 - 9 psi without intercooling on most indirect injected engines is a good compromise. If you start pumping more air you have to cut back the fuel to keep the exhaust temperatures safe, and you end up not making any more power.

you could fit up an electronic boost control to bring the boost on quicker and cleaner off idle, and obviously intercooling can have big power benefits.

cheers

i agree as above

who ever tunes just be weary of exhaust temps, i would suggest fitting a pyro so that you can drive the vehicle to the exhaust temps....

electronic boost control ehh, sounds good if it comes on earlier.

who/where can i get one of this fitted?

right now with a 3 core radiator the motor runs very cool. even on 35+ days temp doesnt go above a quarter,

and with current weather conditions sits on about 1/5.

but again i have no way of measuring exhaust temps at the moment.

Whats a good boost to run with an intercooler, or does it depend on the size of the cooler?

my motor is getting a bit old though and dont want to stress it to much, but a bit more power would be good.

any ricer shop sells them, or try ebay. they come with foolproof instructions.

the water temperature doesn't really tell you anything except that the cooling system has the capacity to shed the excess heat generated. The potential dangers with too-high combustion temperatures include cracked heads, broken valves, dropped valve seats, cracked/broken/dropped precombustion chambers, broken rings, melted and cracked pistons, warped or cracked exhaust manifold, and damage to the turbo, all without so much as a blip on the temp gauge.

even with intercooling, there is a diminishing return on high boosted indirect injected diesels. the problem is that almost all the air swallowed by the motor has to be pumped into and out of the precombustion chamers through holes about the size of your pinky fingernail - this generates a lot of heat on the compression stroke and leads to very high combustion temperatures and localised hot spots in the head. Without internal modification, with intercooling, it should be possible to boost up your motor to around 11 - 12psi whilst maintaining reliability. It doesn't sound like a lot of extra boost but with intercooling the charge air is a lot denser and the potential power is markedly increased. If you want more than that, you need to investigate more serious internal modifications (decompression, less restrictive precombustion chambers etc), which onvolves having the head off the motor and that gets expensive - expensive enough that you may want to consider a new engine. the Chev 6.5 turbo makes nice power.

I have a truck in my workshop that has had the turbo set so that it has boost all the time, $13,000 replacement engine.

Keep in mind that the OEM built the car as it is for a reason. Minor performance upgrades will not affect too much but when you go that little bit too far something will always be affected.

I know its not in the area you want but try JPC (Johnson Performance Center) Thomastown, they played with my 100 series and it runs 10 PSI without an intercooler and doesnt have any temparture problems. It may pay to give Mark a call there and ask some question, he does a lot of the comp vehicles.

Try AG Diesel Dave (Westall Rd) to dial up the Pump - they do good work and have a good rep - get Sandy to knock up an I/C for you though - you will need that to dial her to to around 10-11 psi reliably...

Do you need more to turn your new wheels??? he he!!

Pyrometer is a must for tuning correctly though - I agree with that one!!

Cheers knackers.

Go the intercooler first than if your still after more power

fiddle with the pump and boost as you will need the intercooler anyway

I was going to say that
Mate had a turbo put on his 79series there and others have had work there. He knows his stuff. Just check out some of the stuff there.
Allways been a TOYOTA man.
Now I'm old and grumpy as well.
