Supercharging and Turboing

Post by Doggy »

Just out of curiousity, can you both super charge and turbo a motor. Is it possible or is there just to much plumbing and farking around. Im not interested in doing either to my 4b, the question just popped into my head today

On industrial motors such as the larger Cat, Detroit, Cummins etc They all run 4 and sometimes 8 turbos. These are 30lt up to 110lt rear dump truck engines.
Some of the old GM's ran both the blower and turbos.

Stephen Booth's GU race truck was supercharged and turbocharged at one point. Think they had issues with it, so they reverted back to turbo only.

Detroit ran both in their truck motors, 1292,892, 692 etc. They are pretty old now, but they got some very large power out of em. Can be done, but wonder how practical given todays advanced ahir dyers or blowers.

there are toyota engines that come factory both supercharged and turbocharged

the supercharger is normally fittted with an electric clutch and the computer disengages the supercharger at a certain revs for the larger capacity turbo to take over.

The early detroit engines had to be supercharged as they were a 2 stoke engine. Without the blower they would not work. More power then required the turbo chargers to be added.

Why not do two turbos, one feeding the other. Cummins have a 5.9l diesel dragster that does 7.98 sec 1/4 miles, it runs 2 turbos, 80 psi boost.

oh an idears topic i like these :D

i have always thaught it might be posible to make a free wheeling super charger/turbo so at 2500 and below the belt drives the compresser and above that the turbo kicks in so you always have boost.

i'll do a sketch if people need to see the idear
