My gearbox selector is stuck in P........

Post by BabyGodzillaGTi-R »

Help i need some support here.
Sarted my car up this morning and realised the gearbox selector is jam stuck in P. The car in question is a RR with a 1995 Disco ZF box....
So how should i diaganose the problem? Not a DIY, car person honnestly but the 1st thing that came up on my mind, could it be the selector?
Any idea how to diaganose and sort it out so that i dont have to tow it to the workshop which could be solved in 10mins?
Help...
Best Regards
Victor

my old zf selector was very gummed up with sticky oil and other residue. the shifter release was dodgy. this was in an 86 rangie with a zf, but i'm not sure if its the same in a disco.

can you press the release button to shift? does it move? does it have the same resistance as it normally does or does it move freely? can you hear the release mechanism moving as you press the release button? try to tell if the problem is that the release mechanism is defective or if it's further down at the selector box. hopefully its something simple like the circlip that hold the release button inside the handle has come off - i ended up using a common safety pin. if not, you will have to remove the boot to get to the selector. that might mean removing the centre console.

in addition to the clip, you can turn the nut under the clip as an adjuster, when I was playing with mine if I went too far one way it wouldn't shift

Oh and i forgoten about this. This stupid box comes from a Jap Disco. So i'm worried it might have a solenoid for the ZF box too. Coz recently i got the mechcanic to remove some stupid low/ high range lock out solenoid b4 i could use the transfercase gears.

Hey N*A*M,
the button u press to move the selector seems to feel the same way. As for moving the selector it is just plain jam. I've removed the gearbox panels....
So what should i do for now? My mech says try to look for any solenoid and fuse for starters.... Any tips?
Damn i dont bring this thing offroading to the extent what u guys are doing and yet it gives annoying little problems. How do u guys put up with British engineering? :?:
