Dumbass newbie question

OK, have Jeep TJ ATM but unfortunately it is becoming impracticle and need to go bigger. Looking at diesel 80 & 100 series cruisers. Pro's & con's please.

What am I looking out for?

I don;t expect any Nissan or Toyota to go as well as my Jeep offroad, but i no longer want to go just 4wdíng but do some touring as well.

Can't be assed searching so please humour me. :D

You will be quite surprissed at how little work needs to be done to a cruiser or nissan to make them damn near unstopable!

Unless you have a "Rubicon Edition Jeep" than the standard TJ would only be as capable as the other rigs mentioned!

The toyota and nissan will both make excellent all-round 4wd's, throw in dual ARB Air-lockers, decent suspension and 35 bfg (or similar) and they are one awsome machine!

For the type of driving/touring you couldn't go past the Diesel option, its well suited to water crossings, steep climbs and long distance travel (cheaper on fuel).

As for which one is better between Nissan and Toyota i won't answer that other wise it will start the normal "Toyota V Nissan" war again! (abit like HOLDEN v FORD).

However i don't think you could go to far past the NISSAN GU wagon and for the TOYOTA the 80 Series would be the pick of the bunch!

In the end they are both roughly the same size inside and out and both equally as capable so it will come down to the best deal you can find and which one tickles ya FANCY! :)

Nah wasn't stirring. Didn't mean for it to sound like that actually. What i guess I was trying to say is I don;t expect a semi modded cruiser or patrol to do as well in a more "hardcore"(for lack of a better term) offroading situation than a more highly modded TJ. Sorry if i offended, wasn;t intended

My TJ is modified ie 4"lift and 33's etc and I have no intention of going to that extent with the new bus. Probably OME lift and 33s or equivalent.

Are there any issues/common faults that i should be looking out for on these cruisers?

Dale i drive a toyota not a cruiser but still its toyota and to be honost if i was looking for a touring type vehicle it would be a GQ patrol. In standard form these things can not be beaten for strength or comfort on and offroad. Yes they are a little boxy or truck like inside and out but compared to an 80 or 100 series they are a much better buy.
I beleive the nissan has a much stonger drive train than the toyota.
The 80 and 100 do seam to have a little more creature comfort inside though.

WE'eve owned a '02 TJ and got rid of it as quickly as we could for multiple reasons. But in short it could not compare with my 80 turbo diesel with the same mods.

The toyota walked all over the jeep.

Ill agree with ruff on some of his points, but ill defend the toyota on a few other angles.

Parts are readily avaliable in the country for all models and at a fair price for what model you buy. Nissans devalue quicker and at a higher rate. Parts for a given object are always slightly more expensive per ratio to give them a "prestige" factor.

Interior space is much the same between the trucks where as the 100 series cruiser has slightly more that the others in my opinion.

creature comforts..toyota..
power wise...nissan
fuel economics...toyota
long term value...toyota
capabilites....hmmmm..nissan..DOH! at a pinch :P

One thing im aware of with the nissans is the fact of they have a small overheating issue.
front diff housings can split and leak..EG: like a truck i know of that went to the cape.
I'm not aware of any toyotas doing the same.
Late model nissans have issues with there manual gearboxs. toyota do not

The late model nissan looks bloody sexy on the outside but drab on the interior..

In conclusion...a good toyota will see you through anything an grubby little TJ wont !

or you could look intop a nice late model troop carrier that will do anything you want it too
45 series ute - 308 -gas -35's- lifted -no flex..But i got air lockers !

Sorry I wasnt trying to make it a toy versus nissan thread.
And Punchy is right that the Nissan does not retain its value but if you want a vehicle to basicaly do some touring and a bit of offroading then the intitial saving at purchase could be worth it.
i havent heard about the front housings having a prob splitting but it reminded me they are prone to bending the housing just inside of the swivel ball if driven very hard offroad.

Thanks for the input fellas.

Didn;t really consider the GU as I thought the diesel was a bit small but since discovering the 4.2 well that makes interesting.

Your dead right about resale, the Toyota is heaps better, but does that make it a better vehicle......mmmm now that's a tough one.

Gunna have to research a bit more and ask specific question in the right places, don't wnat to start a brand war.

i like ruff an a toyota man but i can vouch for the GQ patrols running gear strength.. my mate has a 350 chev in his and the only thing he has done to his car is put a new clutch in the other day he has had the 350 for bout a year and is still runnin original diffs, gearbox etc on 35's and he drives it like its stolen all the time :)

same deal with the toyotas, ive seen far more toyotas with V8s than nissans and seen them get driven hard with no problems.

if you are a price sensitive buyer get the GQ or GU (depending on $$)

if you are a non-price sensitive buyer get a 100 series (trust me, these are the shizza) if you've ever driven or ridden in one, or even lusted after one :oops: they RULE, more space than a GU, and arguably stronger, according to a friend (a nissan friend) they drive far nicer, ride better and handle better.

toyota cvs are stronger than nissan iam in a club and all the nissans with lockers always do cvs whne they go hard and they just hjave 4.2 d some turbo off road wise (iam a toyta fan) but they are both the same off road it comes donw to the driver and thigs u have bolted to it as far as i can see

ruff is correct, it would depend on what model of toyota he is talking about drafty. and there is no "out and out" test, but i have a good idea, and drafty, you are as wrong and biased as him, by saying nissan ones are stronger, or at least implying it.

iam talking about an 80 ser to a QG pul them out look at them both together and try both out for every 1 toyoat iv seen do a cv i see at leas 3 nissan this is what i have seen anyway maby u guys have had diffrend
