trip meter / odometer

tried a quick search and couldn't find any old related threads...
so, my trip meter and odometer only sometimes works, hitting the reset stick can fix it for a while, but then after a few bumps it stops again. is this a common problem on GQ's ? if so, is it an easy fix ? anyone got any suggestions before I go pulling the dash to bits ?

sounds maybe like a loose plastic cog in the back of the speedo mech..... or maybe the cable....

either way it involves taking the dash apart.......

i personally havent had this trouble, or heard of it honestly....

The GQ trip/odometer commonly gets gunked up with dust. If your vehicle has seen a lot of dust, (specially bulldust) or you are in the habit of leaving your windows open on the beach, the gears will need cleaning.

The dash is easy to remove. Look at a manual if you need the fine details.
With the dash removed, unscrew the rear plate which has the printed circuit on it. Draw a map of the connections if in doubt.
The trip/odometer assembly can be removed from the rear plate.
Use compressed air and a brush to clean all the gears. Spray it with wd40 or similar and blow excess off with air. Make sure that all the dirt is removed, as one grain of sand in a gear tooth will cause problems.
Then re-assemble..........Easy! You just saved yourself some bucks.

dirtdoger, thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go over the weekend sometime.
be great if its just dirty and no broken or worn cogs.

mickyd: its handy to see how many k's / litre etc.. or as its seems, its more like litres / k ! :?

my speedo doesnt work at all either, so i just use the gps now :D

might get around to fixing it this weekend.

Just give them the instrument cluster, $200 from memory and haven't had a problem since.

Had ours fixed by a specialist. I'm on the gold coast so I wont even bother tell you where, but it was a massive amount of dust and crap in there.

The speedo is electronic, not cable, so its not an 'easy fix' as such HM.

i think i found the cause, two wires have been pulled from a plug coming from the speedo sensor. if i just get a new plug and put all the wires together should this fix it? have been told that this will fix it, but dont wanna try unless i get some more opinions really.

I had this problem with mine and the repairer said that it had been damaged whilst being tampered with, probably thru being wound back.

Ok, tripmeter/odometer is fixed, see how long it lasts.
didn't seem to be all that dirty, although the gear that is driven by the
worm cog seems a little worn, so it probably didn't take much friction to bugger up the connection. Just sprayed it with wd40 etc to make it all move a little more freely.
