Suspension Question
Below is a copy of a quote given to me to do a suspention lift on my nissan terrano:
"Thanks for your email.
I can give you a price including fitting if needed on a 2" lift. The vehicle you have has tortion bar front ends and can only be taken up to a 2"lift anything beyond that is a body lift which we dont do.
Rear coils $180 per pair
Front shocks $264 pair
Rear shocks $234 pair
Wheel alighnment $49.50
Labour $198
all prices include GST.

Can sombody please explain to me why I cant go higher is my rig the only one out there with torshion bar front end I have no understanding of 4x4 suspension but I see plenty of them jacked sky high, can I get new torshion bars Im at a loss where to head with this I want more clearance, by increasing suspension hight and slightly larger tyres I thought this would be a legitimate modification is a body lift even worth doing, It currently has 30x9.5x15 suggestions or thoughts I have a minimal budget AKA wife has to approve so sky is not the limit on price.

Best way for you to get an understanding about how your front suspension works is to stick your head under & have a look, whilst under there move front of vehicle up and down a little by hand whilst watching the control arms movement in relation to the rubber bump stops. If you raise an independant front suspension vehicle (torsion or coil) to much, your control arms will just rest on the bump stops not allowing any further downward movement of the wheel when required. So go the 2 inch suspension lift then get some more height with tyres.

You can always go higher but it would require a much more comprehensive replacement and ajustment of parts in the front end = alot more money. With Ifs if you lift to much you will also be putting alot more strain on your CV joints. I think you would find that as far as aftermarket off the shelf suspension goes for your vehicle 2 inches is the limit.

Touring and general offroad use? 2 inches should be adequite with bigger tyres. If you dont think its hardcore enough get a winch and lockers.

yeh with out a big budget to do a SAS (solid axel swap) on the front
you'll be limited to 2"
if u want u can go 2" body lift as well .. will give u more clearence for bigger tyres ... go the guard chop and fit bigger again....
could be costly as well extending brake lines and the likes that gets in the way remember always do a complete job other wise it'll bite u on the ass on the track
remember in the end its alot of maintence to keep it in working order
the bigger the mod the more maintence ...
theres also legality issues ... spesh if its ur daily driver

ta guys its just for general off road use camping, exploring, took it to radical bay on magnetic island a couple of weeks ago and got pretty close to doing some damage crossing some of the washouts up a steep incline, im new to this , and am fully aware that my skill has more to do with any damage which may happen its my first 4x4, Im certainly not interested in jacking it up for looks I dont have money to wast on rediculous crap, just looking to do practical mods, want to head up to the daintree and do the bloomfield track next, what size tyres do you recomend, as above you can see my current tyre sizes, at the crossmember under the transmision is 11.7inches to the bitumen and the diff centers are 8.2inches from it, I have been informed buy a mechanic up here that if i go up to 33's the 2.7 turbo diesel wont be able to push her, but I just towed a 1200kg trailer from sydney to townsville and she sat in 5th no dramas most of the way obviously the bigger hills had their effect or is he right, I am trying to use your experience to save me headaches would it be correct in saying that with a 2inch lift and 33's on, my new clearances should be diff 9.7inches and crossmember 15.2inches does this sound adequite to be able to handle nth qld type tracks, washouts, holes and begginer mistakes

Welcome to the good life. If you keep an eye out in the trips and tracks section you'll see that we go out and play on a regular basis. Although most of us have vehicles with some extensive mods we also have people with tourers that have just as much if not more fun. It's being challenged to get where you want to go. (for me it is anyway) Look at it this way. When you are at a comp. who would you cheer more for....... A fully loaded truck that get's over the obstacles easy or a vehicle that is less capable but with a determined driver that still completes the course. A 2in lift and bigger tyres will get you a lot further than you may think. Combine this with some good body protection and you'll be able to go almost anywhere you want. There are some good places to get some work done on you engine to get a bit more power out of it or change the gearing to suit. In the end it's about what you want to achieve with your vehicle.
