Front LSD, swap from rear diff??

Post by DieselBoy »

Sitting here at work on a sunday, only three hours to go and starting to stress about installing my locker in the rear diff.
Then the thought occured to me, i wonder if the LSD carrier from the rear would swap into the front???
Its an 89 GQ, and with out my work shop manual here at work, I thought i might mention it on here.

So are the front and rear diff carriers in a GQ similar enough to be swapped from rear to front????

No, Pathfinder rear fits and MQ rear with some machining.

So the Pathfinder/Terrano rear LSD carrier will fit the front diff of a GQ??
That a very valuable piece of information, thanks heaps, the jap import Terrano is one of the most common 4x4's on the road here, every wrecker has one!!
And all the Jap imports seem to have LSD's!!!!
Any one know off hand the specific axel number i wouild be looking for eg H422B or what ever.
Cheers,
Pete.

why on earth would you want an LSD in the front?

So I can go everywhere the double locker boys can, using the secondaries and not worry about CV's breaking. And I still have full steering.

Why on earth would you prefer an open diff in the front? :D

agree with rainbow warrior,

was sick of changing cvs when i had a front locker,

will be putting an lsd into the front of mine as well

Front lsd = much easier on drive train + traction + decent steering

much better than open front. maybe not quite as good as a locker, but i'd rather winch up a hill rather than change another cv on a muddy slope

lsd centre from wrecker couldnt' be more than $300-$400, then it's a matter of doing the swap with crown gear on to new centre then into 3rd member.

Havnt done it yet, been to lazy, but will soon.

But I also like the idea of more grip with less chance of CVs breaking.

Yeah, thats the plan, track down an LSD carrier, do the shimming trick to beefit up, and we are all go.
The Terrano/Pathfinder has a four pinion carrier, and my GQ has two pinion i think, so hopefully i will be gaining diff strength as well!!!

checking arb's parts list,

the navara/ pathfinder rear locker is the same part number as the GQ front. Must be a straight fit LSD into GQ front then.

i was told though that should be going for a Navara april 97 to recent and pathfinder dec 95 to recent for same as gq front.

dieselboy, if you do this soon, let me know how it goes, very interested in getting this done, seeing it's cheaper and softer on the drive train

Had mine in for 12 months now, it was in Red Rovers before that, another mate had the converted MQ version, which all you have to do is drill the crownwheel bolts up a size, but offset them outwards at the same time.

Twin LSD's was great, the front has been tightened up, probably better than just a rear locker. I have put an ARB in the rear now and think the front LSD is working better than the 350,000km factory rear did. And playing in 2wd on some hills the front definately makes a big difference, unfortunately with the ARB rear replacing the LSD, I now have less abilty unlocked.

First and foremost i gotta get the EZ locker in the back, but i will be keeping my eye's open for a Terrano LSD.
I have a mate who has a 89 Terrano, know a guy that as a 93, and there's a guy on offroadexpres.com that has a96 i think, so i will compare Transaxel numbers between them, i suspect they will be all the same.
Maybe, possibly, well, hopefully...............

Not much if you get the clutch packs tightened up.

Well, if the The Diff Shop can get me an open carrier for the rear for $45 out of GQ, which are rare over here i might add, then a Terrano LSD carrier is going to be roughly the same.
I have heard alsorts of tricks to improving a LSD unit, from inserting an extra clutch plate to a worn pack, to extra shims.
I reckon you could do it your self easily enough.

If you can get rear Terrano/Pathfinder/Navara LSD's for $50 each I'll have 3 please :D

Open GQ rears are rare as hens teeth over here, plenty of LSD's.

I would have thought that would be the case here too!!!
But thats what he quoted me, so we will see when it comes to the crunch. My bet is he won't be able to find one.
I will ask him about the LSD to.

If you can find a diff that is the same as the MQ that has an LSD. I dunno of anything that's the same as an MQ front that had an LSD, butb that doesnt mean there isn't something. Whatever it is though will probablybe more expensive than a locker, since it's probably gonna be out of some 4cyl rally or race car.

Apparently the teeth on the MQ crown & pinion angle the opposite direction to GQ so would be weaker, running on the back of the teeth, so it may bolt straight in and give you a 4.6 ratio, but not for long.

I rang a couple of diff places for prices on a front LSD

1 said $500

The other place said that you dont know when the LSD grabs and lose your steering. That is why most go for an air locker to have a control.

Does this sound right?

Sounds like truth if you dont understand how an lsd works. :P

Wind on the power she starts to lock/tighten up and dont and she wont. If you cant synchronise hands and legs then you may have an issue....

But if so you'd have difficulty walking or just be a crap driver.
