I know how to drive them, I know how to create custom enteriors for them...but my mechanical knowledge lets me down a little.

I own a 83 HJ60 and just lately a oil leak has developed. The oil is coming from somewhere between the back of the motor and the gearbox. It occasionally drips onto the concrete from the back of the sump area. Now hoping it was a easy fix sump gasket I replaced that but to no avail.

There was no sign of a leak for a few days afterwards, but I noticed today when I got home from a weekend away fishing that the oil had returned. Like I said before it very rarely drips onto the concrete, but it is still a oil leak regardless and that is one thing in life that I hate. So I want to knock it on the head!

The only other thing I could think of is the rear main. But how (if possible) do you tell? Is there a way to find out (apart from removing gearbox and so on) ???

There are no noises to suggest rear bearings have gone...its just a pissy little annoying oil leak. Any tips would be great!!!!

I'd say your right with your rear main theory. I have the same prob on my 85 HJ60. I'm not worrying about it until I get my clutch done...one day.

what colour is the oil

black oil is engine oil

and the g box should be a clean colour like the of new eng oil or honey

is it the rocker cover or the side cover leaking and running down?

I was just about to say this. When i first bought my cruiser, i thought i had a rear main oil leak. It was the rocker cover gasket. It had split at the back of the rocker cover and was leaking down the back of the motor and appearing on the bottom of the bell housing.

Same, had my leak checked out last service and it's the gasket also..

i had a hairline crack in the sump on my chev.... took a while to figure that one out....

yeah, I've had quite a few probs with my rear main.... was on holidays a few years back and had to get it redone twice on the road... couldn't really take it back to the mechanic that fixed it as they were nowhere near where blew out.... ended up doing it again when I got home.... and she's been right since.....

wish it had of happened near home in the first place, would've saved a shiat load of $$$ on dodgy mechanics!!!

anyway.... go the 60's!!!
