Ute an 80

Hello everyone,

I am currently in he process of researching the work involved in ute-ing an 80 series. If anyone knows of anyone who does a good job at an attractive price, or anyone who knows the process like the back of their hand that has good sensible advice.


My questions are-

What type of work is involved?

Is there anyone (experienced) who might be willing to direct/assist for $ with most/ all tools and muscle provided?

Im getting the feeling it is something to leave with the proffessionals but I am reeaally trying to do this on the cheap (but not nasty).

Would there be major drama's with engineering, rego or insurance ?

Costs invloved ?

Back end / rear window suggestions? What to do with mine and what to use in place of- GXL or hilux bits.

How do they make them look so neat and natural?

Does anyone have any pics or info on uting process?

Negatives and positives- besides the obvious.

Suspension will be changed to suit. We will also be designing and adding the tray.

This is something that I will definately be doing- Just not until I have saved the $, so I though I'd get in early and prepare. The rear end on Goref is smashed and Im tired of his fat ass always being in the way. This is something I have always wanted.

i looked at doing this to a GQ patrol, i was gonna do a duel cab. i got quoted about $4000 for the whole job minus interior work and paint.......that was from creative conversions in Brisbane. how about doing a styleside 80, isnt there a green one getting around called father of hilux??

The green one lives up here near gosford, it was in tuff truck, it's a neat job

My Local panel beater is doing mine drive in drive out for about $1000. But I am leaving it with him for a month to do in between jobs.

If you want I can introduce you and he can do a quote for you.

There is quite a bit of work in cutting any vehicle down the middle (either all the way or half for styleside) so an engineer would be required to check the job. Seeing as how your messing around with major parts of the body it would be best to get a shop to do it that has experience doing this sort of conversion.

I have a mate that just sold his 80series dual cab ute and his conversion had a flat back panel with a custom piece of glass (easy to do when dealing with a straight panel. For its simplicity I would look at doing a tray rear as it would be a lot easier to complete and hence cheaper. One of the best conversions I've seen to date was on a GU at work with a custom tray that blended in with the body perfectly (With the 35's this thing looked awsomet ).

Cost seem to be around the $4000 mark drive in drive out. There is actually a Nissan Dealer here in Perth that will get the conversion done for you with a brand new vehicle for around $4000 and still give you a full warranty. I am trying to sway my old man this way when he gets his new car.

Ive seen Wally's, Ive also seen the green machine it's a nice job, Ive rubbed my drool off it a few times, though what I have planned tray wise hopefully will be neater & lighter- more tube less panel.

I am planning to chop up to two seater only with some room for tools/gear behind me. I have seen some of a US 80 project it was bling not sure if it was on pirate or elsewhere.

Rv I like that it's not bad.

Stuee, sounds good keep working on your dad. Im doing my best to avoid the 4-6k mark seeing as Jeremy and I can do most of the work. I basically need someone to chop and replace the rear/window section and attatch it, properly/legally.

Goref will be sporting a full exo/internal cage, new bar work, new paint design, and 38.5" creepies-That's after chop / I get out of debt and buy Jem a new hydrolic bender .

That's the one! It looks like a big job, he flattened his though. I wonder what the process is of uting an unflattened 80, do they chop as is standing or is it more complicated pull apart job? And the overhang of chassis left, can you legally just remove it?

The yellow one looks sweet, Xtra cab it so you have enough room for esky, fridge, swags or whatever, so you can keep em locked up, would be the one thing I hate about trays, then wrap it up in barwork.
