i have a 88 rangie with a 3.5 ltr that is fuel injected to cut a long story short it is using a lot of fuel. Computer has been replaced, fuel pressure has been tested, mixtures have been reset, new spark plugs,mass air flow meter tested,fuel injecters looked at and cleaned,no vacum leaks have been found.When car is stationary and is on a diagnostic computer it shows that everything is fine. Has anyone got any idea where to go next

    Have you cleaned the fuel lines and the tank?

    Simple to do - that was the problem with my 3.5 (a clump of silicon gasket floating around then blocking the fuel pick up)

    is it blowing black smoke out the exhaust? or spitting black crap out the exhaust when you rev it a bit?

    Mine's been known to do that from time to time smac, what does that imply?

    that would indicate that you are running rich - too much fuel. So maybe Air flow meter is up the creek or something :?:
    Basically it means that not all the fuel that is being pumped into the cylinder is being burnt and what isnt being burnt is coming out the exhaust.

    Mine is doing this at the mo and is in the mechanics :? on mine you can smell the fuel - very rich.

    Thanks smac, that may account for the poor fuel figures I'm getting. Though from the sounds of it yours was much worse than mine.

    yeah, has been running like a dog lately.
    i put it into one shop and they were gonna charge 1300bux to fix it. have taken it to a smaller rover shop and looks like its gonna be a lot cheaper - havent heard the final verdict yet though

    Have you checked the temp sensor that feeds the ECU. Have heard of this failing before and telling the ECU the engine is cold hence pumping more fuel in. Cheap thing to check/replace.

    Mine runs like a dream. Just sometimes I've noticed a little black crap blown out of the exhaust, my fuel figures average between 16 and 20 litres to the 100, which really isn't that bad for what it is.
