Hi there I am from New Zealand and have a 97 double cab hilux that has a 22r. Being in New Zealand my steering etc is on the right hand side and my ute is also only a 2wd model.
It is only street driven but I thought I would ask on here you you guys seem a like a good wealth of knowledge.
Originally I was planning an engine conversion of a 1uz-fe or a commodore 3.8 v6. I have changed my mind however to try and do something a bit cheaper. What I am now looking at is a 5mge or a 7mge.
As I am probally more likely to find a donor vehicle with a 5mge engine in it (celica, supra, cressida) I am going to set my sights on that as I believe from what I have read so far it should be quite a nice smooth engoine with a rebuild for the hilux.
This is the way I sort of think the conversion would go
Obtain donor vehicle with 5mge, preferably manual, preferable 84+ model (I think they changed in 84 didnt they? better ecu and intake manifold or something? please confirm)
Use 5mge mounts to mount engine to 22r lower mounts, small moddification to bolt hole spacing I believe?
5mge manual bellhousing, or 7mge, basically a w series supra bellhousing, to bolt engine up to my g52 gearbox. This is a tempory gearbox just to make the job faster and get the ute back up and running. When funds allow/ and the time comes I will replace with a w56/w58 gearbox
5mge flywheel, heavy duty clutch
Continue using hilux fuel tank, new external inline pump? what options do I have here? where to mount? what sort of pump?
Wire up loom
get power steering all hooked up, mayb custom work involved there
2 10" electric fans on the front of radiator, hilux radiator ok to use?
Is there any clearance issues with the 5mge? Do I need to change to a 7mge sump? my ute has IFS torsion bars any of that assembly get in the way? steering on the right hand side get in the way? exhaust options?
If I find a automatic 5mge such as a cressida is the loom different at all? is it electric auto or anything like that? and will it all bolt up the same aslong as I source a manual supra bellhousing flywheel and clutch.
I plan on giving the 5mge a rebuild before I put it in, new rings, bearings, gasket set, seals, belts, water and oil pumps. Also thinking about getting the head port and polished as I heard it is a good improvment for this engine.
Am I on the right track? I think it is a good bang for buck conversion and I should be able to do it for quite cheap if I wait to find a good but cheap donor car.
If I get lucky and come accross a 7mge donor, it is pretty much the same isnt it? except use 5mge mounts and 22r lower part of mounts. 7mge clutch flywheel, When rebuilding 7mge use metal head gasket, arp head bolts, and retension about 20 pound more than factory
Any clearance issues with 7mge?
Thankyou in advace for any info and help.

5mge into hilux, 7mge into hilux

go to www.offroadexpress.co.nz and you will find heaps of stuff on this conversion.
Ok.... Clearance.... never seen it done on a 2wd but have on a ifs 4wd. If Im correct a body lift is required to close the bonnet.
As for the mating up of the gearbox..... Why not just bolt the whole motor/box combo out of the donor vehicle. Even a 7m with an auto is going to go like stink in a ute.
Hows your budget for tyres???
Where are you in New Zealand. There are heaps of us down Chch way who have done the Supra thing and nothing is a problem.
Also don't be scared of the wiring. The info is easily available. Your local Toyota dealer will have the info you need for the cost of the photocopying.
If you run into any problems send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

Where the f#@k did that come from
Clearance: is the clearance in the 4wd's just because of the front diff? I dont really want to body lift my 2wd. Hopefully I can get away with it, hope someone can confirm. I know there are a few 2wd's running around with 7mgte's and even a couple of 2jzgte's in them.
Isnt the 5mge only about an inch taller than the 22r anyway? is the 7mge the same height?
I feel a manual gearbox would suit my driving style more, budget for tyres is accounted for Changing gearbox to a better version later on isnt a biggie, I just mainly want to get the conversion done fast and up and running. May even look a rebuilding g52 to a more heavy duty box if it is an option.
is there anything different with the 7mge converson than the 5mge ? apart from using 5mge engine brackets on the 7mge to bolt onto 22r mounts?
Mounts
electric fans mounted on front of radiator
new suitable external fuel pump
supra bellhousing
supra clutch, flywheel to suit bellhousing (heavy duty clutch to be used )
custom exhaust
Are these the main points of the conversion I need to concentrate on?
Anything else that I could get stuck on?
Also what would be the best exhaust for a 5mge or 7mge? I am thinking something along the lines of 2 1/4 2 1/2 inch exhaust with either one or 2 turbo flow style mufflers
Dont want it to be loud but I still want it to have a litle bit of sound to it.

Yes I believe so.
electric fans mounted on front of radiator
Yes. Later model surfs have a really nice electric fan which you will be able to pick up for stuff all.
new suitable external fuel pump
VL commodore with the 3ltr nissan motor have an external fuel pump in them. The one in my Hilux works a treat. Early Supras have an external fuel pump as well.

Good luck finding one
Have a look at www.4wd.net.nz
Cheers Thomas
