Buying a Hilux

G'day all,

I'm in the market for a Hilux, preferably an LN106 2.8d. I have a couple in mind at the moment and just have some (or lots of ) questions...

What sort of (costly) problems should I look for in this model?
Any common faults?
One particlar one I'm looking at has around 280,000km on the clock (1997 model), for a 2.8d what should I expect of an engine of this age?
What would I be up for for an engine reco, or to fit a reco engine?
What sort of price would I be looking at for the vehicle?

hmm k, i bought a 92 LN106 D/Cab about 3 months ago for $11,500, has 200k on the clock. 97 model will be totally different for price

Problems with mine:

- I had a bung injector in mine causing it to run rough and blow a shit load of white smoke on startup. That cost me $400 or so to fix and its running like a dream.

- My a/c compressor is playing up, so that could be costly, Qdad are trying to source some parts to fix cheaply.

I guess your best bet is to get it to a good mechanic or racq or whoever you have in your state and get it thoroughly checked

- Engine reco = expensive but 280k you shouldnt need to worry about that if its been looked after


But my best advice is to get it to a really good diesel mechanic who will be able to pick up everything, normal mechanics know shit all

Mine's done 260,000 and I change the oil and filter every 5,000k's. If you treat her nice and maintain them regularly they'll last you for yonks.

Thanks for the answers both on and off group so far.

I've found another that's rather pricey but is in quite good nick and low km/s for it's age (155000). Took it for a test drive and it drove well and no smoke when I thrashed it (as much as you can thrash it on suburban roads with a dealer sitting in the passenger seat!) but i noticed a couple of things that may influence my purchase ... The gearstick was a little bit hard to push into first sometimes (all others were like a dream), dealer claims it's normal when it's moving more than 20km/h, but I thought not.... There is some minor leaking out of the rear diff filler plug, presumably normal. The lack of service history beyond 30,000 was a concern also.

What else should I look for mechanically?
