Gearbox Qs - 86 rangie 4spd auto

Post by smac »

gday,
i am just wondering how good the 1986 rangie 4spd auto is. my vehicle has done just over 260thou kms and sometimes when say going up a hill it will jump from 2nd to 4th when you really need it to stay in 2nd.

ive been told the later model 4spd from the 96 disco is much better/cheaper to replace as opposed to rebuilding my gbox.

whats everyones thoughts

The ZF automatics like yours have been used in Rangies/Discos until recently so there are plenty around if you need to replace yours. Rebuilt ones will set you back a good $3K at most auto trans specalist. My ZF auto cost $2700 fully rebuilt last year, chep compared to what I was quoted by many others.

I'm not an expert on autos, but it sounds like your kickdown may need adjusting if it keeps going from 2nd to 4th on steep hills. I found that if you vary the accelerator on hills this will haappen reguarly and the overdrive will lock up, so keep the accelerator buried up hills so to speak and watch the fuel guage move as you do :D

Later model ZF's will fit. I'm currently doing a ZF auto conversion to my 83 manual (LT95 4 speed), must of lighten the bloody thing by 100 kg I reckon  This auto was from my 93 Rangie that I rolled last year, and also using a 95 Disco LT230. It's a slow process and it's getting there :)

Good luck with it

your 86 4spd auto is a ZF4 and there great but at 260,000ks under its belt its gonne be askin for a recondition.

First thing to do is check your fluid levels and clenliness if its all good then;
IMHO the best bet (if you intend on keeping the car for alot longer) would be spend the $$ get the recondition with stonger JAG clutch packs and internals... will be aroound $2100-2700 (not cheap)
If your not interested in spending the $$ or dont intend on keeping the car for a long time run it till it dies and then buy another second hand replacement $700-$1200 and away you go

My ZF auto kicked the bucket at 270000ks (wouldnt change gear, stayed in nuetral no matter wat, clunked a fair bit) and the internals looked pretty bad, alot of slop and alot of shit to be done (cost me $2790) just as an example of how bad they can get, mine is basically ALL BRAND NEW alot of the time you dont need to recondition the whole unit and parts can be got cheaper to.

good luck :)

A guy told me the Jag parts give more power but reduce reliability. I will ask him next week who his source is and find out more.

EDITED If you live in Qld, Action Automatics at 6/29 Bailey Cres Southport quoted me $1900 fitted and $1600 and something not fitted to recondition my Zf auto with 12 months warantee. His number is 07 5526 3299.

The jag cluth packs are larger and stronger, dont see how they give more power but it may be so.
Its well known that the JAG bits are more reliable, so where this guy got the idea of them bein less reliable is beyond me :?

you should expect to pay around $300 more for a reco using the JAG ZF internals. (around $150 if you only use the JAG clutch packs, this is the most common).

4WD Stuff / Shane - Who's the guy doing ZF's on Gold Coast?

Is it Mario at West Burleigh Auto's?
Heard of him sort of, meant to be pretty good.

YES - Please post contact details of whom you refer to. Ta.

My ZF having probs at 120K. Dealer serviced whole life, now pumping air instead of oil. Dealer wants me to exchange the entire unit (RRP $4,270 fitted)

Not sure who the others are talking about for doing ZF's, but Rick @ Rick's 4WD (5596 6662) in Nerang does and IMHO is the best bloke on the coast to do any LR work. He only does rovers and has worked on my S3, Rangy & Disco and does a couple of my mates stuff too. He's done some conversions to, like a ZF into a Defender etc.

Thanks for this info, I will definitely give him a call bcause my Rangie deserves some TLC.
Any idea how much he is??

This guy only does automatic transmissions and that is what he has done since he left school. That is what he told me over the phone if I remember correctly. He won't touch anything else because he only know automatic transmissions. I don't know if he is the best but in my enquiries he has done ZF reconditions before and everybody else wants to charge an arm and a leg and then some.
