I think that means i got 4.88s?
What engine and gbox combo would be a neat fit and be legal and match the diff ratios to 33" or biggeer tyres?
Diesels? Petrols?

do you want to keep toyota or not i personally like diesels so a 2L with a 5 speed box - 5 speed is a small amouunt of mucking around though

If you were going to all the trouble you wouldn't swap in a 2L, the 3L would be the better choice if you were going deisel!
If you are thinking petrol and wanted to stick to toyota gear than the 22R would be a pretty good choice!
However for the cost of doing both of the above conversions properly you could nearly swap in a Holden V6!

exactly why i asked if he wanted to stay toyota
3L over a 2L i asked a lot of people b4 i rebuilt the 2L and most said to rebuild the 2L as mine was a MK1 2L pre 86 i think - apprently the strongest of the L series engine - but that is what i was told
3L would want to have more power though

I was also told by my diesel mech, that the pre 86 2L was the strongest and was mre relaiable with a Turbo than a 3L (even though the 3L would have more power)

The cheap way to go is look for a manual Supra with the 5M-GE or 7M-GE under the bonnet. If thats too hard the for even less dough look for the 6 cylinder Celica with the 1G-GE ( should be common, theres also the 1G-GTE turbo ). Its only 2 litre but makes good power and torque and also bolts up to the lux box

What age (approx) are these engines?

Do the 5M-GE, 7M-GE and 1G's all bolt up to the bellhousing, same clutch, slave cylinder, starter, etc?

The 5M-GE starts about 1981 and goes thru to around 1986-87
The 7M-GE ( and GTE Turbo ) start around 1986 and go thru to early 1990's
The 1G series starts around 1982 and lasted into the early 1990's, this motor is basically a 4A-GE with 2 xtra pots

This tells you approx power o/p of all toy motors. The 5M I have has good torque with 5.29's and revs to 8000 when you stand on it
My 5M was soooo cheap to do compared to a mates commo that I fitted lockers, and 35 Simex ET's and still had change from his spend up !

sorry, what i mean is so that the thing still drives decently on the raod, not super sluggish, and so it has decent ratios offroad..
ie, i thik mid 90 hiluxs have 4.29's but if you goto 4.88s you can run 33" tyre with little differance in ratios at the wheels.. if you left normal diffs and ran 33s you would be mega slow.. and have farked ratios offroad!
