Anyone have any thoughts on the Detroit EZ Locker??
I have pretty much decided that it's what I'm going to get.
$550 for the locker and $45 for the open carrier.
My next best option was the Detroit locker that was the whole assembled kit, carrier and all, for $950. I thought the price was a bit high, and it was probably a bit more than what i needed. That and they are reasonably noisey and clunky.
The EZ locker should be a bit more driver friendly on the road, and is half the price!!!

What are you putting it in?
Had a Lockright for 5 years in a GQ, found it very Good and reliable, only down side which didint bother me was the steering gets firmer once the front shaft is engauged ie. H4 L4.
Now i belive the EZ locker is the same as a Lockright.
Now everyone is going to Cain You for not going for a Airlocker,but it is a good option for the price! The Cheapo LOKKA Brand gave the Lockright a bad name.

The old boy and I were waying this decision up the other day. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going an auto locker in the front of a part time 4wd vehicle. In fact it almost makes more sense.... less $$$ less parts....
But the major determining factor for me is $$$. And after watching the Firetruck at TTC with detroits front and rear I can't see anything wrong with them....

Yeah, hold on, i posted a link in the tec section a couple of days ago, but basically they a positive locking differential.
That driving force you exert on the locking unit from the drive shaft, the harder it locks.
On the road, when traveling in a straight line, both wheels are locked together. When coming from a straight line into a corner, the inside wheel retains the same speed as it had on the straight section, an the out side wheel speeds up. It is designed so that one wheel can speed up faster than the other, but not slow down, slower than the other wheel in relation to the speed the driveshaft is turning, not road speed. That bit is important to getting your head round it.
Either wheel can speed up faster than the drive shaft speed but not slow down.
So when you get stuck off road with an open diff, one wheel spins at the drive shaft speed, and the other comes to a complete stop.
The positive force being applied by the locker in this instance will not allow either wheel to stop, but mearly locks harder to gether.
If you have two ratchets for you socket set, place them side by side, one in forwards one in reverse, the handles become the drive shaft, the sockets the axle shafts.
If you were to tighten somthing, the ratchets would lock, but if for some reason, one of the bolts was being driven by some other force in the diretion you were tightening, the ratchet would start to ratchet. As soon as that other force on the bolt stopped, the ratchet would lock again obviously. Now if for some reason, something tried to spin the bolt in the opposite direction to which you were trying to tighten, the load on your handle would increase, and provided you kept hold of it tightly,the ratchet would lock together harder, but not let the bolt spin back wards.
Same with a positive locking differential.
Read the lock wright installation guide too, its better than the guys step by step.

ive recently fitted a detroit locker to the rear diff of my Gq long wheelbase, its almost silent in operation, it does tend to throw the vehicle to the left when releasing the clutch after changing gears, its great off road, stays locked when needed, i went with the detroit because i got it second hand for $50, bargain eh

When I started looking for a diff lock some time ago I looked at the Lokka, LockRight and Detroit.
I soon knocked the Lokka off my list due to too many accounts of failures. Talk to TJM (LockRight) and Opposite Lock Detroit) re" prices for a GQ.
The prices are so damn close to an airlocker its ridiculous!! (Not including compressor) The cheap prices you see in promotional material (* from $-----) are usually for Hiluxes ans Zooks.
If you haven't already got a compressor, you get one. If you've got one, rigging up an air system is simple and cheap (<$100).

Most people just use the EZ locker as its half the price, and still a very high quality unit!! Plenty strong enough for a standard vehicle, but probably not if you've got a quad cam V8 in your SJ413

I nearly hit the floor when the prices were quoted. I know I can order an ez lokka from the US and get it here for about $550 ~ $600 but they do not make them for Patrols. So I am told anyway.
I will make an enquiry for one to suit my Pathrol ( ) using your link.

I believe, that's more or less what I said!!!
A couple of hundred more (only x weeks more of saving) and you can have a diff lock that only comes on when you want it. That's why I got mine!!!
